Interview with Carol Kasik

Describe your desk
I sit in front of two large windows for the view of the mature tree in front of my house. This helps with my focus as I click on my keyboard and look at the screen of my laptop. I am surrounded by family pictures on the top of my bookshelf, file folders for the projects I currently work on and to my left a very old treasure chest filled with memories that my mother bought me while she was living "best gift ever!"
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I come from a very small town east of Montreal. As a child I loved to read and would read the same books over and over. Writing has always been therapeutic for me; helping to release mental clutter; helping to refocus; or simply venting!
Most of my work has been around some type of writing and as a facilitator, well words are important, no they are essentials.
When did you first start writing?
I think the first one is when I pretended to write about how to understand and communicate with teenagers. My daughter and I were having difficulty communicating and after being told many time "you don't understand me" I decided to find a way. So I decided to write a book, asking her questions, asking her friends what it meant for them when they would say that sentence to their parents and so forth. I never did published those hand written pages but it did help me to understand what my teenage daughter was going through and how to keep us close.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's about me, about Julien, about how our initial connection from when we were teenagers never left us even if he did. For 35 years, I wondered what he had became and he did the same. All those years, I felt all sorts of emotions from anger to love for him and what we had. As a grown up woman I wanted to find peace with my past and understand why I never stopped thinking of him. It was very easy. No matter what happened and lots did, we both never stopped loving each other.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I used writing as a way to analyse what had happened and what was happening between Julien and I. When we found each other, we both had families that didn't quite understand "us" and many stories of what we had gone through during all those years. Julien suggested that I start putting to paper our discussions, our memories. Friends were intrigue about our lives and many wanted to know about our love story and all of our adventures, so I decided to honor our lives and our love and wrote a novel based on our story.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing how it all flows together. Reading back my pages, knowing that I wrote this, that I was able to produce a book. I still can't believe that my name is on a novel. That dream that so many want to be an author, well, I, me, did it.
I am so proud of this accomplishment.
What do your fans mean to you?
I think of the readers as people just like me. Some may feel hope after reading my novel and not give up on Love; some may understand that it's important to be true to who they are; to not be afraid of showing the world what they are capable of; some may just want to read it by curiosity of what is the true story behind this novel.
What are you working on next?
I was asked on several occasions if I will add another book to let people know about our adventures... I have not decided at this point if I will or not. I know that my fingers are getting edgy again...
Who are your favorite authors?
I don't have any specific as I read a variety of different books and materials.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life itself! knowing that I have this time on earth to enjoy many more adventures and that I can make someone smile or assist them in their life journey...
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a facilitator/moderator so I am often on the road for different projects. I am a family person, so having time with my husband, daughter, family, friends is a priority. Summer time, I escape and drive my little Miata called Fancy; it's like being on vacation when I hit the road with her.
