Interview with KaTisha LaShay

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The very first story to have an impact on me that I read was Zora Neal Hurtson and her title "Their Eyes Were Watching God." It was so real to me. The book was written in 1937 but everything about it made me feel that I was right there in the book like and invisible character that walked every step with them. I was already writing short stories but after reading that I knew I wanted the reader to be there in the book just as I was in that one.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I only have 2 favorite. I love books but it takes a lot to be my favorite and none have made it. And Actually it is 3 books, because the next book that I am publishing is my third. 1 is Zora Neal Hurtson - Their Eyes Were Watching God and 2 is Toni Morrison - The Bluest Eyes and of course last but not least, KaTisha Lashay - Love For The Ghetto. You can read that soon too.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in two places. I spent my young years in Berkeley, California and my teen years before college in Sacramento, California. Both places influenced my writing greatly. I believe I was able to see different ways of life and my education in Berkeley helped shape my mind. Sacramento gave me better access to being in peoples lives and seeing how they live and making it easier for me to develop characters.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in sixth grade. Poetry mostly but I was a beast at short story writing. Mu sixth grade class took a trip to the Oakland museum and there was a exhibit that we were to write about for the museum. Well my poem was selected by the museum to be published. That is when I knew that I had the talent for it. It's nothing like people praising your work to let you know that you are good at something
What's the story behind your latest book?
Its a love story. It is a story about falling in love with God and yourself. And once you fall in love with God and yourself, you then will be able to fall in love with who God provides for you.
