Interview with Donald Aday

What do your fans mean to you?
Knowing that people actually enjoy reading my books, and are interested in my work, in something that I have an interest in also, is very gratifying. I never tire of seeing the numbers of views, downloads and actual sales of my books. It makes me feel very good, and encourages me to continue on to my next book.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The creative process.
What are you working on next?
My interests are varied, I'm eclectic by nature. In my writing, as in my artworks, I am drawn to several different genres and subjects. But, I can say that I am working next on a fictional piece.
Who are your favorite authors?
Some authors I've admired and enjoyed reading - Lamour, Chandler, Hammette, Poe, Sabatini, Dr. Dyer, Chopra, Dickens. Schaefer.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in West Texas, a town called Midland. The major influence from that experience would have to be from a few of my teachers in school who recognized some abilities in me and encouraged them. Also, the many movies I saw growing up, touched the romantic and adventurer in me. When I discovered the library, I was set off on a path of new adventures for my fertile imagination. I've been a voracious reader ever since.
When did you first start writing?
At a very young age, I began writing creatively for an assignment in school. It set well with me, and the favorable response from my teacher certainly helped me feel good about the experience.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has opened doors to more quality places to sell my books than I could ever hope to find. I like it's distribution network very much, and I like the helpful, generous and intelligent attitude that prevails at Smashwords. Always trying to help writers with their works, and with advice and insightful opinions. I'm very glad to have found them.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have a variety of interests, including artwork, travel, reading books (I have short stacks of books I'm reading or intending to read all over the house, and I carry one with me as well). Golf during the summer, chores at home, and planning new books.
What is your writing process?
After the idea has stewed for a while, and I've gathered some notes, then the research continues, as I formulate a general working outline of the book. I carry writing material with me usually, so I don't miss any ideas or lines of thought. I gather related material and inspiring examples as I go through each day. All my materials eventually join me at my desk to mix all the elements together into a storyline, following the central ideas. Freely writing the first draft, just to get it flowing, rough it out, so to speak, then chisel it all down, again and again in rewrites until I'm happy with it.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to make the images on the cover of my books as visually interesting and dynamic as possible. They have to catch the potential reader's eye while still relating to and giving a strong hint of what lies ahead inside the book.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I happened into it. Friends who are writers have inspired me, and I found the challenge of writing and publishing my own books could be very satisfying. I've always encouraged my writer friends to publish their works, so I figured it was time I did the same. I like the creative process. And I like having my own books as tributaries in my income stream.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Joining Smashwords, and putting my books into their distribution mix has been most effective for me.
