Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the beautiful lakeshore community of Muskegon, Michigan where watching the sunset over the lake is an evening out. We have four seasons in Michigan and each of them has its own character and challenges, but also each season offers its own vision. I love fall most of all. Writing is much like experiencing a colorful sunset or a cold snowy day. It awakens the senses.
When did you first start writing?
It's kind of funny why I began writing. I was working for an engineering firm in Las Vegas, NV and was good enough at my job that I had plenty of free time on my hands. Originally, I read novels and I read a lot of them--one right after another. I was at my desk one day and decided to just start writing. Only by chance I had found my passion.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have always loved fantasy, especially dragons. Freecurrent is a fun romping adventure through a fictional land. It is full of love and friendship and courage. My heroine, Jesse, is a seventeen year old girl who has an old soul.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was driving my daughter to school one day and discussing the novel I had written many years earlier. She encouraged me to get it out of the box in the garage and do something with it. I had a local computer store transfer it from floppy disk to a flash drive and went to work. After some research into getting it published and a past attempt, I decided to e-publish on Smashwords to get it out there because I have faith in my work and I think people will enjoy reading it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords made it possible for me to get my work published. People who have read my novels have enjoyed them and it has been an honor and a privilege to be able to share my passion with them.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love my characters and enjoy sharing their lives. That may sound strange, considering that I created them, but they have their own personalities and have taken on a life of their own.
What do your fans mean to you?
It is the most gratifying thing in the world to have someone enjoy my work. I love to hear people talk about the characters I have written with excitement and passion. "When is your next book going to be done?" is my favorite question.
What are you working on next?
I am presently writing Freecurrent III Dynasty. My next story is going to take a little more of a sci-fi turn, but will stay in the young adult genre.
Who are your favorite authors?
Koonz, King, J.K. Rowling, Brooks, Weiss
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have to get up and get the kids off to school and take care of the dogs in the dog kennel I run. After that I exercise, clean the house, get my errands done and if I'm lucky I get to do some writing before picking up the kids, making dinner, helping with homework and going to bed.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I take care of my family full time. They are very time-consuming.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
All three of my kids have a Nook. They seem very happy with it, although the boys use it more for game play than for reading. My daughter is constantly reading on hers. My sister had an I-pad and I know several of my nieces have Kindles. They are all good devices.
