When did you first start writing?
Around the late 80's
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's about a man, who while attempting to have that one special relationship, fails upward.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Writing for me started out as a self help kind of therapy and evolved into writing fiction centered around varied relationships.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords allows for ease of publishing without all the usual hassles.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to get under the skin of how we portray the surface of our lives. This process I find intriguing.
What do your fans mean to you?
Being accepted or rejected, being able to relate or failing to.
What are you working on next?
A novel titled "Along the Way". It tracks the life of a man from adolescence into middle, as he fails upwards in relationships.
Who are your favorite authors?
Fitzgerald, Morrison, almost any writer who can develop a full character in a setting that seems real without wasting my time with uneccaary words.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Coffee.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Drawing. working in my garden, and having conversations with my friends.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I download samples to see if the style and subject matter is engaging.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, "Peter Pan". I still have a battered copy of it.
What is your writing process?
A rough draft goes down in my computer. Then, endless, endless rewrites. Occasionally, I free associate write to music. Usually, these don't evolve into a story, but every once and awhile, something interesting develops.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, "Peter Pan".
How do you approach cover design?
I give a general idea to the designer that would express the mood of my work.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Great Gatsby, Sulla, Heart of Darkness, The Glass Castle, Behind the Beautiful Forevers, and Breakfast at Tiffany's. I like the economy of words and the unusual story lines. I detest when an authors has nothing to say, and says it anyway.
What do you read for pleasure?
Reading is not a pleasure for me; I have dyslexia, making the process work.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kendal.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Keeping the price low and the story lines interest high.

Any table at any coffee house.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in St. Louis. This has allowed for twisted mid western conservatism to be reflected in my work.
