Interview with David J. Pleau

What is your writing process?
I am a graduate of Kaplan University, holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutritional Sciences. I also have engaged in pre college study in the field of nutrition as well as post study. My areas of expertise are nutritional ratios, foods to avoid, super foods, nutrition and longevity, ethnic histories and their ties to nutrition and good health/longevity, proper cooking techniques, sports nutrition, avoiding and curing nutritional based (malnutrition) rooted ailments, vegetarianism, Traditional Chinese Medicine,
etc. . . From my research, I focus generally on one topic and write scholarly articles on each subject, sticking to non biased and academically accredited sources.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
As best as I can remember, it was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. It's impact was to establish a taste for adventure and to somewhat of a degree, travel and seeking new horizons. Of course, as time went on, that sensation was tempered by the realization that to romanticize i quite different from reality. Now, I am content with literature on reality subjects as opposed to novels based on fiction.
How do you approach cover design?
Presentation is key to a successful author, as "one picture is worth a thousand words", yet I am currently constrained due to budgetary considerations, and have as my e book covers more "humble" cover representations.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Omnivore's Dilemna, and Cooked, by Michael Pollan because of his well researched presentation on the reality of cultural cuising, and the books of Bill Bryson due to his acute sense of humor in relation to his travels in America, England, and Australia. His book on Africa, whose profits went to CARE, was a philanthropic enterprise and didn't project humor.
What do you read for pleasure?
Biographies, instructional books on various subjects, and sociociological and psychological issues, to the end of trying to delve into secular reasons as to what makes people "tick". Also humorous true life biogrophies, and success stories.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I had a kindle device which is no longer functional, but it was good while it lasted.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Thus far, I am with "Smashwords", but am open to any and all options that will prove successful.
Describe your desk
I work from a laptop and at the local public library, although I have an oak roll top desk at home.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Waterville, Maine. It was a very quaint small town and very enjoyable to live in. It has favorably influenced my perception of the formative years of my life, and has given me an optimistic viewpoint of life in general.
When did you first start writing?
I have been told from a young age that I have a knack for writing, which likely springs from the fact that I have always enjoyed reading and thus via osmosis acquired the necessary writing skills.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Nutrition, as that is my focus on all of my current books, and it is a topic that evidently needs to be addressed globally.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The need for gainful employment has been a driving factor in my authorship, though if I wasn't so pressed financially, I could and would pursue other topics.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Thus far, Smashwords and my progress is still in a state of flux.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being that I am writing on practical and scientific issues, the affording of the public valuable health related information has been comforting to me.
What do your fans mean to you?
I am not aware that I have any fans, other than the ones used to cool me off on a hot day, and these do mean a lot to me!
What are you working on next?
Whatever surfaces in my life in the department of practically.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
My published e books are on the topic of my professional education in nutritional sciences. In the USA today, there is an epidemic of food related illnesses, and these conditions can be prevented or reversed via proper nutritional intake. My books are affordable and the content is current and accurate. If potential readers are concerned with the issue of nutrition's role in health, than I honestly feel that my books will help greatly!
Sincerely,
David J. Pleau
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, as a child, I wrote a short story about mice and their antics. My sister read it and told me that it was very good. I didn't publish it as we were then in the pre computer and internet age (mid '60's), but it bolstered my confidence. I no longer read or write fiction, but prefer to put out health related publications, as this field has always fascinated me.
Sincerely,
David J. Pleau
Who are your favorite authors?
I read many non fiction true life adventures, biographies, military histories, solving the longitudinal navigation issue, life and health in different countries of the world, and other interesting realities, and the authors are varied (I read at least one book per week and to remember names of all authors is beyond my memory capacity.
Sincerely,
David J. Pleau
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Optimism inspires me to get out of bed each morning. I lost all of my route work in February of 2008, and the stress of unemployment continues to afflict me, but such circumstances inspired me to return to school, and I graduated from a Bachelor of Science program in Nutritional Sciences with Summa Cum Laude status. I am currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Nutritional Education, and hope that in the near future an opportunity arises which will afford me the opportunity to use my education in practical ways.
Sincerely,
David J. Pleau
