Interview with D.L.Heather

What are you working on next?
Right now, I'm working on the second edition of Breaking the Odds, which is going to be an omnibus.
Who are your favorite authors?
That's a tough question, but my top three favorite authors would have to be Edith Wharton, Anne Rice and George Orwell.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend most of my time reading, writing and researching but when I'm not doing that I go for long walks, long drives and try to travel when the opportunity arises.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, the first story I ever wrote was as short story called A Loss for Time.
Did you always know you wanted to be a writer?
I did actually, from the time I can remember, I would get home after school and write quite vividly, in my journal about my thoughts on any given day. For some, it can take years to know what it is you want to do with your life, but for others you just know at a young age what your passion is, for me that was the case, writing has always been a part of me, both personally and now professionally.
How do you approach cover design?
As soon as I have a story in mind, I pretty much already have a visual of how I want my cover design to look like. I do a mental sketch in my head and go from there.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like reading the classics, including Lolita, Ulysses, Sons and Lovers, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress etc...
Even though I've read them numerous times - I just can't help myself. Every time I pick up a favorite book I find something new and intriguing.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The most effective book marketing technique for me so far has been actively using twitter and keeping other social media platforms up-to-date. It's time consuming but it's worth it!
Describe your desk
At the moment my desk contains a half full cup of coffee, tons of paper, my laptop and crumpled up notes and diagrams.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Penticton, British Columbia depending on where in the world you are, you may think of it as a small town, but in fact it is a beautiful small city in the Okanagan Valley. To answer your question, in a way, it absolutely has played a big part in my life and my writing. For any individual, your roots and upbringing mold you in a colossal way extending to your adult life, which has been the case for me.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book, Breaking the Odds. Is a mix of personal experiences I've had with people in my past who have struggled with addictions, as well as my desire to perhaps on a small scale someway help someone who has gone through a similar situation as my main character, Jackson.
