Interview with Mike VanHoose
When did you first start writing?
I've written different stories all my life. I never really put a whole story together until just a few months ago.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's a set in a fantasy world. Although it has elements of magic and sorcery, the plot itself is a murder mystery/love story.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always loved reading and self expression. Creating alternate worlds for people to explore is a highlight for me.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's created an avenue for self expression. Everybody should have such an option.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing a story unfold before my eyes
What are you working on next?
A contemporary fiction piece with a grouchy old man and spitfire old woman
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Thoughts of retiring to the road in my camper.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I golf way more than is healthy. I have three daughters who were/are involved with sports of some sort. Travel. Nothing I love more than hitting the road in my RV and seeing what's over the next hill.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
East of Eden. John Steinbach My goodness, greatest piece of American literature ever. It's the only book in my collection I refuse to share.
A World Without End. Ken Follette. Merthin wasn't the only one who fell in love with Maris.
Where the Crawdads Sing. Delia Owen. Super curveball at the end.
Stardust. Neil Gaiman. Made me believe in fairy tales again.
A Farewell to Arms. Ernest Hemingway. War, love, death, heartbreak.
What do you read for pleasure?
I'm a big fan of historical fiction, horror, and contemporary fiction.
