Interview with Donna Barber

What do your fans mean to you?
As a writer of fiction, I want to entertain.

As a writer of non-fiction, I hope to be able to help people think differently.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a number of stories and possibly a novel.

I've nearly finished a non-fiction book exploring some very radically different ideas about society in general and the role of women within it in particular.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Looking after my family, gardening, decorating and listening to music.
What is your writing process?
It varies; I tend to write as and when I find the time!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
'Oliver Twist' - showing the triumph of the human spirit over oppression

'Crime and Punishment' - raises some of the deepest questions ever posed in a novel

'Rissa Kerguelen' - one of the most brilliant science fiction novels ever written

'I The Jury' - shows how human morals aren't always the same as society's conventions

'Walk to the End of the World' - one of the finest dystopias ever created
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Don't know yet!
When did you first start writing?
About eight years ago
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Don't know yet!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My children and my husband!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a light-hearted and humorous piece about a girl's night out that got rather out of hand!
How do you approach cover design?
Lord, I'm useless. Sometimes artists have helped me out but on my own I'd just upload some random image!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
The East End of London; it made me tough, gave me my sense of humour and raised me with a questioning mind!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The difficulties of becoming published conventionally!
