Interview with Doug Shear

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Giving away free drugs with the purchase of my book The Marijuana Gods! seems to work.
Describe your desk
This antique desk belonged to my mother, who died at the age of 94. My wife and I stripped off the wallpaper she covered it with (sad but true), sanded the wood and stained it. Since it is so old, it's too small for today's chairs, so I can get under it with tips of my knees. Fortunately I have long arms.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the sleepy little resort town of Miami, Florida which transformed in a busy Latin American metropolis as I transformed into a pimply teenager. I dodged the roving gangs of Cubans as best I could, but preferred the safety of my room. Not much to do but watch my little black and white TV set, and write.
When did you first start writing?
When I was ten years old I wrote these imaginative science fiction stories which I never published. Most of the concepts movies and books written by others. But I'm not bitter...
What's the story behind your latest book?
Well, in the 1970's I hitchhiked across the country with a closeted gay, openly black friend, met up with a bus full of Jewish hippies, harvested and sold marijuana, got seduced into the most notorious get-rich-quick scheme of the twentieth century, and ended up in a crack-house with a cult of heroin-shooting Satan worshipers. Seemed worth writing about eventually.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I'm not writing on a regular basis, I get depressed. So it's either writing or Prozac.
What do your fans mean to you?
I have some really dedicated fans, or supporters, which helps me to believe that I'm not just delusional or insane. I just need about 200,000 more fans to really feel good about myself.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to pay my bills. I have a cactus and succulent nursery that I built in my patio and I spend a lot of time there.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. I was ten years old. I wrote a story about a little boy who discovers a magic bookshelf. When he reads a book, he is transported into that world. He thinks it might all be in his imagination, but when he returns to the real world, he brings with him a token from the magic world.
