Interview with Drac Von Stoller

Published 2016-09-29.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I am originally from Peoria,Illinois and got introduced to my first horror experience from the TV Series, "Dark Shadows."This show really creeped me out when I was a little boy. Then when I moved to Tennessee in 1972, I watched actors on my 19" black and white TV in the horror genre such as Peter Cushing, Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney and Christopher Lee. I'm still a big fan of the old horror movies even today. When I started writing in the horror genre I didn't realize at the time where all my inspiration came from until I started looking through my movie collection and 90% of my movies were in the horror genre.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing January 2010.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The 5th volume of my series "31 Horrifying Tales From The Dead," has one story that after writing over 124 short stories a light bulb went off in my head and I said to myself "I can't believe I never thought of this story from the beginning, but when I finally started writing this story it's the only story out of all the stories I won't tell the title or what it's about because I've seen thousands of horror movies and have never seen one that was like what I've written. The main reason for this book is to have enough material for a TV series which will be 155 episodes and to have lasting power like my favorite host of all time Rod Serling of "The Twilight Zone" and "Night Gallery" Rod Serling was a great writer of short stories and I never grow tired of watching any of his TV series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm sure every indie author has been through what I've been through. First, you call publishers thinking you'll get a book deal and the rest is history, think again, welcome to the real world. I called book stores and Wal Mart thinking it would be easy to get my book in stores, another brick wall. Then you say to yourself what am I going to do nobody wants me. Then depression hits and you just say what's the use and give up. Or you can say to yourself there has to be a way to get my name out there and then you start looking on the internet and there it is the whole time companies like Smashwords, Amazon, iTunes and Google Play and Books others that are willing to give indie authors a chance to succeed and I'm thankful I chose these companies and now the rest is history.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
All I had to do is upload my 155 Short Stories and Books to their site and make sure it met their standards in order to be sent to the retailers they have. Once everything passes and Smashwords is happy then just sit back and watch the sales begin. Smashwords is a major part of my success and I can't thank them enough. Smashwords has saved me a lot of time by not having to upload to these sites individually, which with a catalog my size would be nerve racking. Smashwords was able to get 23,000 of my "Free" downloads from Apple which hadn't been reported in over a year and now I'm hoping Smashwords can do the same with Kobo who has probably 20,000 plus "Free" downloads that haven't been reported since August 2011.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
That it comes easy and that people are downloading my stories by the thousands in over 118 Countries which I never dreamed would happen. I did have someone that liked my work say I inspired them to want to write in the horror genre. Watching my sales go up and downloads makes all the hard work I've put into it that much more rewarding.
What do your fans mean to you?
Without my fans I'm nothing and I would not have the success that I'm having right now. I'm thankful my stories are spreading throughout the world.
What are you working on next?
Writing my 7th volume of "31 Horrifying Tales From The Dead." During the month of October 2013, Audible.com Audio Book Halloween Promotion I came in 4th place in sales. I have done an interview with XM Radio in October 2013 to promote my Short Stories and Audio Books. Next, is TV and Film which has already begun in March of 2014 with my first short story "Bloody Mary," "The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs,""The Haunted Mirror," "The Doll" "No More Mr Nice Guy," "The Vanishing Hitchhiker," " Dracula: The Legend Lives" "Zombie Bride," and "The Clown.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Knowing that my stories are being read throughout the world and I am getting more fans. If all goes well my dream of all dreams TV and Film.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Listening to music or watching something that has to do with the horror genre or visiting friends.
