Interview with Diane Copeland

When did you first start writing?
I started writing fiction when I was a child. I wrote my first short story at the age of eleven. I still have that story to this day.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy for me is creating memorable characters and fictional towns such as Bliss Falls. After all, it can be anything I want it to be.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything to me. It's indescribable. When someone truly enjoys what I've written or it touches them in some way, that is a great feeling. One young woman who read "Breathe" was so touched she actually got a tattoo that read, Breathe. That was completely unexpected on my part and I was speechless. I still am.
What are you working on next?
I actually have two works in progress. One is a collection of mysteries, short stories and flash fiction that I've written over the years. The other book came to me in the middle of the night and I just got up and started writing. When I was writing Bliss Falls, I fell in love with the little town and two of the characters. I'll just say that Bobby & Ginny will be taking their relationship to a new level very soon.
Who are your favorite authors?
James Patterson, Stephen King, the Bronte' sisters and Dean Koontz, just to name a few.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of time with the animals that live in the woods nearby. I have a degree in psychology and applied behavioral analysis and I use that to connect with animals, deer mainly. I also like to go horseback riding and I enjoy catching a good flick.
What is your writing process?
When I start writing, I just let it flow. I don't worry about grammar or spelling, I just go. You can always edit later. I like to get my ideas down right away.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I'm not sure about the very first one, but Wuthering Heights touched me so deeply, I still cry when I read it for the 5th or 6th time. A truly tragic love story.
How do you approach cover design?
That's the hardest part for me. I have a picture in my mind but it never seems to come out the way I want it to. I end up making anywhere from 3-6 covers and then decide on which one to use.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of thrillers and mysteries. I always try to figure out the end.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I suppose it would be Nook. However, my favorite type of book or format will always be paperback.
Describe your desk
Cluttered! However, I do know where everything is and I have dozens of post-it notes everywhere.
