Interview with Dr. Michael Pinkus

How did you discover Pressure Point Therapy?
I was new in practice and had a patient come in who was a very tall, big gentleman. But he was bent in half, literally! He threw his back out lifting a garage door. It took me several minutes just to get him on the table. Other than the pain, his main concern was being able to go bowling--that night! I was hoping I could get him off the table after my treatment!

I did as much chiropractic on him that I could, which wasn't much because of his severe pain. So I started working a series of points I learned when I studied acupuncture. But I used my hands, not needles. After working on his lower back I started working points going down his legs. These points were along the sciatic nerve, which goes from the lower back to the toes! I found and treated the tender points.

After about 20 minutes I asked him to get off the table. He stood up straight! He was able to move around normally. He thanked me and asked if he could bowl in a few hours. He had such a good response I told him, why not?

Pressure Point Therapy was borne during that treatment!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Maybe one of the best places to grow up. I went to school with the Coen brothers. I was a musician and my neighbor and another friend, who I played in garage bands with, auditioned with Prince, when he first was starting his fame. They got the gig, Bobby Z and Dr. Fink. Matt Fink lived like 4 houses from me. There were lots of arts and creativity.

For me, my writing style is similar to the way I speak or lecture. I could almost dictate a book but I enjoy the time writing!
How do you approach cover design?
The cover has to communicate the subject of the book. I had a great artist from the UK design my book.
What do you read for pleasure?
I have an affinity for John Grisham books. I also read books on nutrition and natural health. I read a great book on business and viewpoints of business owners called "Business Brilliant" by Lewis Shift. Outstanding book.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Radio, without a doubt. In my first printing of "Pressure Point Therapy" I was a guest on hundreds of radio talk shows. I sold thousands of books!
Describe your desk
Really? At least I know where everything is!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always done my own PR. I interviewed with a publisher from NYC. He said they'd pay me a small percentage of sales but I would have to do my own PR!

Smashwords is an indie's dream: you can write anything and get it in front of a world-wide audience!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
First the accomplishment of actually doing it. People have lots of IDEAS (I know I have an abundance). But it is getting it DONE that separates the boys from the men. So the doingness of writing is very rewarding.

Next is the dissemination of subjects that are meaningful to me. As a doctor I have a lot of knowledge on how the body works and what should be done. Added to this I am a natural doctor, no drugs. So I have many tools in my doctor's bag!

Then the thrill of getting great reviews and making it a business. I think anyone can do this and should!
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. They are the reason I chose this path in life.
What are you working on next?
Pressure Point For Pets!

We love our pets more than people (sometimes). Pets have Pressure Points and I have had incredible results treating these furry friends! How would you like to learn this and apply it to your pets? See, I knew you'd like it!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My days and nights are full. I am working on several projects at once. I produce radio shows and recently shows for PBS. I have web sites and am involved in product development.

I am a family man and love being with them. I am taking care of parents too.

I love water and boating. I also can spend hours taking something apart, building or fixing things.

And being a chiropractor, I am always treating someone. Even my dogs!
