Interview with Robert Davis

When did you first start writing?
I started writing in 1997 when I started my PhD in Marketing about online marketing relationships and retail branding.
What's the story behind your latest book?
There are a lot of books about social media. This book is inspired by the community. Put the control of the brand back into the community. Stop the marketers shouting the brand at customers in social media. The book is designed to help people think about their revolution.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
To make a change really. I get bored by traditional managerial books that are based on large corporations with huge budgets. I want the revolution in social media business to come from the grass roots. This is the source of innovation.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has allowed me to speak and have access to a market of people that were traditionally behind counters. Hi!!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Shaping ideas. The great think about self publishing is change. It changes. Traditional publishing is really about one version in hardcopy. Done and that is it. This process is also more accesable and sustainable. As an author it puts me more in control. Sure, my work is not perfect. But, it is out there and evolving. Tomorrow is always a new day.
What do your fans mean to you?
It all my work and research, they provide the source and value and inspiration. It is the old principle of business. If you want to know how to create value; talk to your customers.
What are you working on next?
A book of brand relationships with Kaly Nou. The is a revisit of the whole notion of brand relationships.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Thinking really. I have a lot of projects on the go that I just love. The people I work with and of course those I love; my kids.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With my kids and partner. I love vegetable gardening and riding my Cannondale MTB. Tennis and running. New Zealand is a very cool place to live and work. So, am lucky to be here.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I knew they were there. I just wanted to have a a try. They old way takes a lot of time. I was looking for control.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
lol...yes, my PhD on online retail from 1997 and 2000. This was one of the first in the world.
What is your writing process?
It starts with a lot of research. Often over 1 to 2 years. That gets converted into a manuscript. Editing then occurs from there. I like to collaborate also.
How do you approach cover design?
I focus on colour, words and image. There are some things that work. I also have limited resources so I do my best.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Use social media hanging of a good blog structure. In my case Wordpress. Linked to social media channels. Get the conversation going...
Describe your desk
Big, old and very heavy. I like to keep in clear. I look out a window into the back yard and the sky.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Takapuna, Auckland, NZ. I suppose it made me grounded.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Robert the Rose Horse. Loved the sneezes and graphics.
