Interview with Dan Schiro

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a somewhat rural area, and having lots of time to myself with a pile of comic books definitely helped foster imagination.
When did you first start writing?
Probably in first grade. I took second place in the young authors contest at my school, but I think I lost points because my story about time traveling back to win the Vietnam War was too violent!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating is a rush that you can't get anywhere else. When the writing is going well, it's everything you need it to be. I really do believe that it keeps me sane.
What do your fans mean to you?
The world! A little bit of support or a few kind words are the kind of "base hits" that keep a writer playing the game.
What are you working on next?
More action and adventure, though this next work skews a little bit closer to true space fantasy. I also plan for it to be an ongoing series, so hopefully those that like my work will have plenty to read for years to come.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family, the chance to create something great and my alarm clock.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Mostly with my daughter. There's no end to the games, songs, and words that are born every day!
How do you approach cover design?
I came up with some very rough concepts, and then my beautiful and talented wife helped me mock the best of them up. After that, I hired a fantastic professional illustrator named Owen Richardson, and he really brought it to life.
What do you read for pleasure?
A little bit of everything, but speculative fiction has always been closest to my heart.
Who are your favorite authors?
Nabokov, David Mitchell, Frank Herbert and George R.R. Martin.
