Interview with Dustin J. Palmer

What is your e-reading device of choice?
Definitely the Kindle. My wife and I won one at a Christmas party one year and I've been hooked ever since.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing seriously a little over three years ago. I was messing around on the computer one day, putting the finishing touches on this short story I'd had rolling around in my head, when my wife asked what I was doing. I told her and she asked if she could read it. After finishing it, with tears in her eyes she looked up and said, "I had no idea you could write like this!" That was the inspiration I'd been needing. A year later I self published my first novel, Chronicles of the Vampire Hunters: The Coalition, the book that would eventually become Creation, Judgment, and Extermination.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are everything to me. I still find it surreal when I get an email from one of them telling me how much they enjoyed my work. It fills me with something I've never felt before. A sense of pride, I guess you'd say. The last thing I want to do is let them down.
What are you working on next?
Right now I'm working on wrapping up the Chronicles series. After that I'll take a small break from that world and work on something a little different. I love Zombie Apocalypse stories. Authors like Mark Clodi, D.J. Molles, Michelle DePaepe, Rhiannon Frater, and of course Mark Tufo, have done some amazing things in that genre, so I think I'll take a shot at delving into that.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not wrangling my three kids, getting them ready for school or picking them up you can usually find me with a line in the water. I love to fish. I could sit by the water catching fish all day long. To me nothing is more peaceful.
How do you approach cover design?
Usually by trial and error. Finding a good cover, one that really fits your work and at the same time will draw in an audience is almost as hard as writing the book itself.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been a HUGE contribution. Without it I never would have been able to self publish and really get my work out there to those that want to read it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
What better job is there than to be a writer? Think about every aspect of your life. Movies, television, video games, magazines, blogs, books . . . whatever it is that you do for enjoyment a writer had a hand in it. From Shakespeare to Stan Lee, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King, on and on, writers have probably influenced our lives more than anything else! Without writers to record our history, to tell the stories that need to be told, where would we be? I can't imagine doing anything other than this.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family. My wife, my kids. Everything I do I do for them.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was in the . . . fourth grade, I think. We had to write and illustrate a story that would then be typed up and read to the class. I basically ripped off the plot to the movie Spaced Invaders, which had come out around the same time.LOL I worked on mine long after we were supposed to have turned it in. Even then I wanted my work to be the best that it could possibly be.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book that I really remember reading was The Lonesome Gods, by Louis L'Amour. My uncle loaned it to me one summer and I enjoyed every single page. I still try to read it about once a year. That was the book that really got me into reading on a regular basis. Today I can't go to sleep unless I've read at least a few chapters.
