Interview with Dusty Lynn Holloway

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love the surprises. When I write, sometimes, often, I write by the seat of my pants. I think and plan, and then I just write and see where it takes me. Sometimes it takes me to a familiar place. A place I can look around and see how my novel plotting got me there, and sometimes it's completely unexpected. The familiar is great, but so is the unexpected. I think great novels have an ecclectic mix of both.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! I wrote a short story in high school. I never finished it because I gave what I had written to my English teacher, and she gave it back with a lot of bleeding red all over the page and an "It's ok but a little immature." Imagine! Me! Immature! Lol. I'm actually grateful for her honesty. It WAS horrible, but it was the best I had at the time. I'm grateful for a craft that grows with me through time. One in which I can make mistakes, learn from them, and hopefully create a better story for you.
What is your writing process?
The pre-book writing process is different. But usually, for the books I'm working on presently, I read through what I wrote the previous day, sometimes aloud, to get myself grounded back into the characters, world, and story, and then I just continue. Sometimes I can write a lot, depending on time and the difficulty of the passage, but most of the time it's less than 10 pages a day.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of fantasy, some scifi, a lot of soft romance or 'clean' romance, a few non-fiction titles, YA, distopian, fairytales etc. But my favourite genre by far is Fantasy. There's something about it that sets fire to the imagination.
