Interview with Dennis Vidoni

When did you first start writing?
In St. Attracta grammar school I wrote an article about chewing gum that a cynical friend of mind thought was great. His praise has stuck with me for sixty years. My first published book came out in 2013 so I'm a neophyte author. I thought (felt) like I had a good story to tell so I did.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My brother's search for danger, adventure and multiple ways to prove his manhood. I was his assistant in this search. This story is about the pitfalls and pratfalls of a wilderness survival adventure.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was searching for a channel to tell my stories.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords provided and organized, competent outlet for storytelling.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing, reading the final product and the concomitant sense of accomplishment. Similar to the feeling i got when I finished building the deck attached to my house. Five months of intense labor with an eminently visible result. I guess i'm result oriented.
This orientation highlights one of my weaknesses i.e. I have a difficult time living in the present. I'm thinking about the next hurdle.
Perhaps a strength and a weakness. Maybe all weaknesses are strengths and all strengths are weaknesses.
What do your fans mean to you?
If I have any fans they are friends and relatives. They love me and l love them.
What are you working on next?
I'm not sure, perhaps stories about family camping adventures. Or perhaps stories from a series of road trips taken with a friend. Or maybe stories from blue collar Cicero, illinois the town of my youth.
Who are your favorite authors?
I don't have strong feeling about authors. I'm good with Sue Grafton and Patricia Caldwell.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I'm not inspired to get out of bed each day. I just do it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love watching, playing, reading and interacting with sports. I love newspapers and politics. I stay physically active and fit by jogging, bicycling, tennis and golf. I love to cook for my wife and drink beer with my friends.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in blue collar suburban Chicago. The son of Italian immigrants, educated in Catholic schools for eleven years until they kicked me out. For whatever reason my midwest, Italian, Catholic underpinning infused me with a positive view of my fellow human beings and a philosophy the considers humans on earth as moving nine steps forward and eight steps back. But we are moving forward. So my writing has light comedic quality to it. I hope.
