Interview with Emily Eck

What's the story behind your latest book?
Him & Her is hard to explain without giving too much away. Yes, it's an interracial romance, but I believe it to be just a romance novel. The hero and heroine deal with many of the same challenges all relationships do. There is an added layer that brings Michael and Denise together that has nothing to with race, and is the foundation for their love. This is the focal point of the book and it will likely make you cry! I cried writing it. Happy reading!!
What are you working on next?
My current project is darker than anything I've written before. It's not dark in the erotic sense, but it's graphic. What I will say about the nature of the graphic content is that its all real. Each scenario is pulled from my current career as a social worker in a large city. You get a glimpse of social work as both the hero and heroine are social workers in the child welfare system. The book addresses how our early life informs the field of work we chose. It also explores how mental health issues don't go away until they're dealt with--no matter how hard one tries to power through it.

Our hero pulls our heroine out a funk. Can she pull him out of a mental health hole way deeper than she ever imagined existed?

Current Title (subject to change): The Violence of Birth
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Insomnia. Elle's story was keeping me awake at night. I had to purge it from my mind onto the page. After that, the stories just kept coming.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I get to live vicariously through my characters. I wrote a scene based on a real life situation. When I was in that situation, I remember wanting to kick a chair over. In real life, you can't go around kicking over furniture. In book land, I kicked that chair AND I growled. It was awesome.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yeah. It was about a girl losing her best friend.
What is your writing process?
It varies. An idea usually comes to me and I jot down the general idea of it. Then I create a loose outline. I add to the outline as I think of different pieces of the book. This part is all done on paper. I am old school like that. Words flow better out of my pen than on a keyboard.

Once I have an idea of what needs to happen in the book, I go to the computer and type scenes as they come to me, usually out of order. I often know a scene that needs to be created, but wait for it to naturally come to me. When it does, it often is like a movie in my head. I see the characters, the location, and the action happening in my mind's eye. Then I try to use words to capture the scene.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No. Not at all! The first story I ever read was probably Blue Bug.

I do, though, remember the first time a book really spoke to me. It was Belinda by Anne Rice. The protagonist was a sixteen year old girl having to do adult things. I was in a similar situation so it resonated with me. One minute people treated her like a kid, and the next she was enduring adult sized pain. I related to it. Plus it was the first book I read with sex in it!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Describe your desk
My kitchen table. A blanket next to my computer where the cat lays. A blanket under the table where my dog lays. It's a family affair, this book writing thing.

Update: My beloved cat passed after 17 years of life, 14 spent with me. Now it's just the dog doing her best to touching me in some way while I write. Though she misses her feline brother, I believe she also likes having me all to herself now.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is user-friendly. I feel like they WANT me to succeed, and do their best to help me. The autovetter rocks! Plus, as a first time author, they handle A LOT of the stuff I wouldn't know what to do with. ISBN numbers, distribution, managing royalties, etc. I can focus on writing.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The youth I work with.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Goodreads is a big source for me. I follow people who read books similar to me. I like gritty romances, as well as the cry your eyes out ones.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
For brilliance, inspiration, and ALL the feels:
Making Faces by Amy Harmon
In the Stillness by Andrea Randall
The Thompson Sisters Series by Charles Sheehan-Miles (It's a crier in the best possible way!)

The King Series by T. M. Frazier - More specifically, Preppy. God how I love Preppy.
The Artist Trilogy by Karina Halle and all subsequent books with Javier - Really, any book where Javi makes an appearance.
