Interview with Eddie Lay

What are you working on next?
I have several that I'm working on. A ghost story, a mystery geared more toward adults, and a sequel to Hannah's Hats.
Who are your favorite authors?
Thom Clancy, Dean Koontz, and James Paterson.
What is your writing process?
I normally get an idea for the title first, and then I write whatever pops into my head. After a few chapters I go back and make an outline of what I have written so that I can keep track of the time line, make sure I don't have the MC meet someone in chapter five when they had words in chapter two.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Without Smashwords I would never have been published/
Why do you write
I'll hear or see something and think "that would make a great story." I continue thinking about it until I get it down. The first time I heard of the golfing term mulligan I thought this is a great word, and I wanted to write about it. When my granddaughter Hannah was small she loved hats. My wife and I thought it was cute, so Hannah's Hats was born. Someone will say something, or I'll read something and the light bulb goes off and I have to write about it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Right now I'm trying to build a fan base, so I don't have any fans. I want people to like my stories, so if I continue writing maybe some people will.
What was the title of your first story
It was a short story titled "A Slight Case of Fear." I am compiling a collection of short stories, and that will be included.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When my first book was published in in paperback in 2006 it sold for $12.95, and I received .48 for writing it. I didn't think this was quite fair, because it's not easy to write a book and it a long time. Now the price is much lower, but I get 70%.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first short story at the age of 19 while serving in the U S Army. Pleased with what I had done, and at the urging of my buddies, I sent it to Alfred Hitchcock. Expecting to receive a huge check I waited to hear from Mr. Hitchcock. Instead of a check he responded with my first rejection letter. Undeterred, I penned another and sent it off. Unfortunately he refused this one also. Devastated I stopped writing for several years.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to tie it into the story. For Hannah's Hats I searched for hats similar to ones worn by Flappers in the 1920's. When it came to Mulligan I decided to follow what my idol did. Alfred Hitchcock always appeared somewhere in his films, but he stayed in the background. My granddaughters, Brittany and Samantha, photographed me without showing my face.
What's the story behind your latest book?
While doing research for Hannah's Hats I stumbled across The Pit and the Pendulum. For some reason this struck a cord in my head. I wanted to write about a swinging pendulum. As the Pendulum Swings So Does My Heart popped up. However, this sounds like a romance novel. I wanted to write a mystery, so it took some time to revise it to fit.
