Interview with Eduard Joseph

Published 2013-10-16.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Anything by Stephen King. He is a master storyteller and not afraid to let his imagination run wild.

His work has a major impact on my novellas, novels and short stories.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Broadcast messages on WhatsApp, Twitter tweets and groups on Facebook. You can reach a lot of potential readers on Facebook. They have groups dedicated to Indie writers and eBooks. It is a wonderful platform to get your work noticed.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was about twelve years old. It was only in High School that I got my first fan - my English teacher was a great fan of my essays and short stories and continually encouraged me to pursue my dream of writing. I am still in contact with her.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I am currently working on a new horror book (I'm always writing down new ideas).

I love horror, but I find that most horror stories are about ghosts or serial killers. I decided to write about what scared me as a child - the monsters hiding under the bed. I do not want to give away too much as I have only written two chapters so far, but I can promise my readers that the book will be anything but normal. I love throwing curve-ball twists at my readers and this book will be no exception.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Getting a book published in hardcover is hard work - I guess that's why it contains the word "hard".

My first ebook, "Freaks want love too" was written back in 2004 and submitted to a publishing house under the title "Cowboy". The publishing house returned my manuscript and stated that the book was too weird to be published. I submitted it to three other major publishing houses in our country but they all turned it down stating that there simply was no market for my type of writing.

So I left the manuscript on my bookshelve for years... until I discovered e-publishing in 2013. I never stopped writing, and decided to publish all my short stories and novellas as an indie author on Smashwords and I have to say it was the best move I have made so far. I have reached plenty of readers who enjoy my strange and peculiar writing style.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Someone once said they would love to be in my head for just five minutes. I took it as a compliment as most of my stories stretch the limits of what is normal. I have a million ideas floating around inside my head and to get it published for the whole world to read is the best feeling ever - especially when I stumble upon a great review someone wrote about one of my books.
What do your fans mean to you?
Without fans there would be no writers. My fans (especially the ones that tracked me down and followed me on Twitter and Facebook [I did not even know Facebook had a follow option on my page]) bring me great joy when they tell me what they thought about my latest book. Irrespective whether it is good feedback or bad feedback. When its good feedback I marvel for a moment, and when it is bad I try to improve on the mistakes I made with my next book.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Eduard Joseph (can I mention myself?)
What is your writing process?
I wake up screaming from a nightmare and write it down immediately. Haha... okay perhaps not literally, but most of my stories are inspired by dreams I had. Some of the short stories are just idle thoughts I have from time to time.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My first book I recall reading was "House of Bones" (I do not recall the author) which formed part of a teen horror series. It was one of the weirdest stories I ever read and I loved it. I remember reading it three or four times as a child, but cannot really remember what it was about. I do recall that it was about a house built on an old Druid line and that the house ate people.

"House of Bones" was the book that made me love horror and strange fiction. I would love to read it again one day... oh the nostalgia it would bring me.
Are you religious?
Yes, I believe in God. No, I do not believe everything religion tells us to believe. There are some points I feel the church got wrong and that was one of the main reasons I wrote my book "The Town". It got rave reviews (and some negative), but it is purely my interpretation about faith, religion and God. The Bible was written by man as instructed by God, but over the years the context of God's word has changed. (Compare today's Bibles to ones from say 1940 and you will see a vast difference)

The Bible is open to interpretation. I do not say that the church is wrong, but I am not saying that they are right either. I just want the world to make their own interpretations as to what religion means to them. That is why I feel my book "The Town" is such a controversial book.
