Interview with EJ Divitt
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I became an indie author because I lost a bet to my husband. I had already written several fiction manuscripts and short stories. They are taking up one drawer of my desk but I never did anything further with them. I would do National Novel Writing Month year after year and just pile up the manuscripts. I also like to give advice; to help people find what they need. Well one day my husband told me I should write down all of the etiquette rules my father and mother had taught me. He then proposed a bet with the stakes being if I lost I had to submit my etiquette book for publication. This resulted in my first indie publication, Etiquette As I Learned It. I lost the bet but it was the best bet I ever lost.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of different things for fun. I am a big fan of paranormal fantasy such as the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne and The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. I read a lot of mystery. I read romance. I also listen to a lot of nonfiction audio books. I recently heard Blink by Malcolm Gladwell which I enjoyed and a finance one that I will not mention as I did not particularly enjoy it. I currently have Cold Days by Jim Butcher going as an audio book and I am reading Wild Invitation by Nalini Singh in paperback. I also have Rapture in Death by JD Robb going as an ebook.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, Things Every Goddess Should Know . . . And We Are All Goddesses, is actually something I have been working on, off and on, for 10 years. I would write down good advice I got or lessons I learned or quotes I particularly liked on little slips of paper or sticky notes. I did this for years while the pieces of paper piled up. I most have had a few hundred of these slips of paper in a file in my desk drawer and one day I decided to organize them. This became the first draft of TEGSK.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
When it comes to e-reading, I generally use my Kindle Fire. It was a gift that I would never have bought for myself but I use it constantly. I read on it; browse, play games. I even listen to music on it. I still prefer the feel of a book in my hand but I often bring my Kindle Fire when traveling so I can have a lot of books in one small place.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I can not remember the first story I ever read. I have been reading for as long as I can remember. Books are an indistinguishable part of my life. I can no more remember my first story than I can my first breath.
