Interview with E. J. Tanner

What's the story behind your latest book?
I LOVE the friends to lovers (and also, enemies to lovers) theme. I had an idea in mind to create a story about a woman living in nineteenth century England, determined to become a novelist but destined to marry a nobleman... a woman who would fight for her dreams to come true.
I combined that idea with the friends to lovers one. From there, it was easy to come up with the plot, although the details were sometimes a bit difficult.
When did you first start writing?
I first began writing when I was about thirteen years old. I wrote a short (very short) story based upon my interest in Star Wars, of all things!!
Later, when I was in high school, I fell in love (no pun intended) with romance novels. I tried my hand at writing one when I was about eighteen, but it was pretty pathetic.
In college, I majored in English and took several journalism classes. I also wrote for our college newspaper. It was fun, but my heart still pulled towards creative writing. I knew, deep down, that I just wanted to write love stories.
With that goal in mind, I set out to make it happen, determined to get at least ONE book published in my lifetime! I have to say, it is a fantastic feeling to have accomplished this dream!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After I completed Kindled Love, I sent it to about ten different agents/publishing companies. No one was interested.

I read On the Island (by Tracey Garvis-Graves) and I remembered one thing I read was that she decided to self-publish when On the Island was turned down. I began researching self-publishing and quickly realized how many people were getting their books out to retailers without going through an agent. I figured, if they can do it, why not me?
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been AWESOME just by simply distributing my book to so many retailers and making the self-publishing process relatively painless!!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to write down all of these stories I have in my head and when someone reads something I've written and they say, "I LOVED IT"... It makes it all worth while!
What are you working on next?
The sequel to Kindled Love (title has yet to be determined). It will be Eleanor's story.
Who are your favorite authors?
Where do I even begin?!
Lisa Kleypas
Eloisa James
Lorraine Heath
Julia Quinn....
To name a few!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Playing with my sons, going out with my husband, spending time with family, girls nights, yard work, going to the beach or mountains whenever I can....
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have the Kindle App, as well as iBooks, so I will do a search whenever I finish a book and just look until I find something that strikes my interest.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a VERY short story based on one of the Stars Wars movies!!! I was about thirteen when I wrote it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I ever read was Ramona the Brave by Beverly Cleary. I was in first grade. I absolutely loved all of the Ramona books. I can remember how proud I was to be able to say I read a "chapter book"!
My love of books has never diminished.
