Interview with Elancharan Gunasekaran

Published 2016-09-01.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read mainly Sci-Fi novels and modern poetry collections. I'm a huge fan of the Dune series by Frank Herbert and anything that is on a galactic level!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My iPhone!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Getting on social media platforms and interacting with readers and artists works the best for me. I put out daily literary works/pieces to get followers interested in what i'm doing.
Describe your desk
Right now it's practically clean and neat, sort of empty. cause SOMEONE cleared all my stuff! When i'm in a writer's RAGE, my desk looks like a war bunker that had survived an a-bomb!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Singapore, i've practically lived here all my life. The different races, the various stereotypes that you get from living in a multicultural society, of growing up in a rapidly developed nation, political and social notions such as freedom of speech in Singapore have influenced my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in March 2011 after completing my National Service and during my first job at a local newspaper company.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Watching Aliens, is the embodiment of observation and poetry. Anything experienced during my travels around Singapore gave birth to Watching Aliens. How we as a society have evolved from flesh into circuits and digital catastrophe. Looking around me, around us, I see my people, they walk, they talk, they behave like robots. Watching Aliens, is us being alien to one another, losing that personal touch and feel.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I realised that writing in Singapore and around the world had become too mainstream. We always writing about love, heartbreak, yada yada yada; the rest is just so normal. There are so many unspoken stories, taboos to be broken; poetry does it without breaking a sweat. The need to tell stories and break barriers have motivated me to become an indie author.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing is the greatest joy, especially when I'm writing poetry. the ability to play and mould words. Seeing my words published as an e-book or in print adds to the joy of writing!
What do your fans mean to you?
Readers. Fans. Followers. No matter who you are; you make or break an artist. Your support can bring a writer up or plunge his world into chaos. Fans are as important as the words and writing. A happy fan will go the extra mile to show you the love you deserve.
What are you working on next?
Poetry! Poetry! And lots of experimental poetry! Stay tuned for more!
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite authors are Maya Angelou, Dr. Seuss, Edgar Allan Poe, Carol Ann Duffy, Rumi for full-length poetry. Jack Kerouac and Ryan Mecum for shorter poetry. I often infuse sci-fi and religious notions into my work, these are often the cause and effect of sci-fi authors such as Frank Herbert (Dune series) and Kevin J. Anderson.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Adventure. Every day is a surprise, an adventure, a new beginning to our life. To get out of bed each day is a blessing, and a greater blessing to see your loved ones alive and well.
Your advise to emerging artists/writers?
Be brave, be forever…

Limbo is a collection of short poetry, haikus and that in-between place that we go to when we need to escape reality. The collection explores the feelings of being impartial, neutral, not taking sides but just being there in life. Limbo is the call of forces beyond our understanding, a slight horror, a minuscule terror, the urge to maybe peek through the keyhole of dreams. This is Limbo.

O, just the random poetic ramblings of a mad man... Jellyfish on the wall, jellyfish in my closet, the world's gone bonkers! Humans in space abort their Earthly landings. Love is a transition, a door, a passage between life and death. Hearts hunger, souls linger and alternate worlds are shattered. The change is human life, the minds of our fragile existence. The only threat is- immortal jellyfish.

Watching Aliens

Watching Aliens is a majestic collection that embodies the observation of humans. Actions, feelings and situations that may seem so alien to us are in fact, things so common. We humans, in this digital age have lost what is commonly known as, personal touch. Watching Aliens, is inspired by Jack Kerouac's modern haikus; the need for an inclusive society in this current age of rapid modernisation.
