Interview with Mark Elswick

Where are you from, and how did it influence your writing?
I grew up, for the most part, in Michigan. However, I lived in TN and VA for a few minutes as a little tyke, and lived in Kentucky for about three years, junior high years. However, my family and I always wound up back in MI. I really don't think that influenced my writing. Basically, becoming a published author wasn't something I aspired to do as a youngster. That came way after college.
When did you first start writing?
I was a sportswriter all through college. However, my first thought of actually, maybe, becoming a writing was when I wrote a paper in my senior AP English class. The teacher, the immortal Dr. Robert Cronin--RIP--pulled me aside after class, telling me how great and funny my essay was. Basically, it was a funny piece about the frustrations of playing golf.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Latest? I have three going, currently. Let's just talk about a short story I wrote and put on Smashwords, tonight, 9/4/13. "Faith" is a story, essentially, defining the word without ever using the word. A young boy is trapped in a house fire. By the end of the SS, readers are cheering and rooting for the lil' guy to escape. Then he, . . . c'mon, ya have to read...just $1.99.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have a book published by Modern History Press, "Padman: A Dad's Guide to Buying...Those and other tales. However, I got lucky w/that one. Finding a publisher, without an agent is rough from everything I've heard and seen. So, I want my work out there.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords offers a writer a chance to just write, edit and publish his or her work without waiting forever to find a publisher. I love smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is hearing someone tell me that my writing affected his or her life. Or, hearing them tell me that my writing was inspirational. As certain big-time wrestlers used to say, "Whatttttttttttttttt a RUSHHHHHH!"
What do your fans mean to you?
The WORLD! Without feedback from readers or audience members when I speak, I wouldn't want to be a writer.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a novel or novella (not sure, yet) about a woman who was kidnapped, held hostage, and threatened for hours by a gun and knife. . . . by her husband. Stay tuned b/c there's a chance I'm going to slap it on Smashwords. "Dollars, Drugs, Weapons, & Wedding Cake: A Wife's Warnings"
Who are your favorite authors?
John Feinstien, Mitch Albom, Stephen King, Nicolas Sparks, &, of course, THE MAN, Mr. William Shakespeare
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The chance to do something better.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love about anything to do w/MOST sports, especially my homestate teams of the Detroit Tigers, Lion, & Red Wings. Then, of course, GO BLUE! (University of Michigan Wolverines)

This short story is a true story about one morning when I was five hours late for work. Unfortunately, it was on a job I had just started. My best friend kept me 'til the wee hours, and I must've turned off the alarm. In my 20-year-old brilliance, I thought if I got a doctor's note then everything would be fine. When I got to the hospital and reported food poisoning . . .
