Interview with Emma Lang

Published 2018-11-14.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing to me is when I bring joy to the reader. It might sound corny, but if my words can evoke emotions from the reader, then I feel as though I've achieved success.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are EVERYTHING. I love hearing from them, talking with them, interacting with them on Facebook or email. Having fans means we get to share what's in our heart and those folks love our characters as much as we do.
How do you approach cover design?
I work with a couple of great cover artists. They ask me to look for covers that appeal to me and help them see my vision. A professional cover is worth so much - it's the first "howdy" for the readers.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read ALL the books. LOL. The majority of the books I read are historical romance with a smattering of contemporary in there. I also read general fiction and women's fiction. Sometimes biographies or some other type of book. I am a true reader!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use my iPad mini - fits in my purse, easy to carry and hold. Love it!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The most effective marketing techniques have revolved around offering the first book in a series for free or .99 book. I use BookBub ads, Facebook and my newsletter to promote the first book. It works on me too!
Describe your desk
My desk is in my office, which has lavender walls and white flowing gauzy curtains. The desk has a container of gum, an overflowing pencil cup, half a dozen sticky note pads and at least a dozen sticky notes everywhere, a goose neck lamp, and two large monitors. I have a tempurpedic desk chair too. :)
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New York, lived in California and Connecticut and settled in North Carolina 22 years ago. I was never around horses until I arrived here and that greatly influenced my love of westerns!
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing since I was in third grade and my teacher told my parents I wrote beautiful poetry. Since then I've written many types of things from poems, to newspaper articles, novels, novellas, short stories and by day, I work in technical writing. My entire world revolves around words!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
That each and every day is a gift. I try to savor it to its fullest and make sure I tell my peeps that I love them.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read (a lot) and I love movies. I also go target shooting with my husband. I can't write westerns without knowing how to handle a gun! ;)
