Interview with Erik T. Jackson

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Marshall, Tx. Marshall influenced my writing in a huge way. My family first and foremost have always believed in me, no matter what it is that I have done. So, when embarking on writing books, they were so supportive, and it gave me so much confidence. They also reminded me of different capers that my friends and I got ourselves into, that I was able to incorporate into Destinee's life. My friends, the people that I was around mostly, bring a lot of color to my writing. That is, they make it come to life. Most of my teachers in Marshall were big influences on me. I remember every smile, every kind word, and all of the encouragement; because that's what has influenced me the most, the words and deeds that made me ponder, and think... in a different way.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in high school. My senior year I wrote an essay, and entered it into our Regional competions. It won. I took it to the National ACT-SO competions in Chicago, and although I didn't win there, it gave me a greater respect for writing. I did plenty of other things, before writing called me back. Having that early experience to draw from has been invaluable.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book introduces my main character in my next book Destinee Fontaine. My latest book is called Introspectives, and it shows how Destinee goes from a girl to a young woman. She seems to have it all, and yet she can't seem to get out of her own way when it comes to relationships. It's an inside look into what Destinee is thinking in certain situations. Introspectives also gives you some of the colorful language that Destinee Fontaine uses, as well as some quotes from the mind of Destinee Fontaine. Introspectives ends with a sneak peak at the first chapter of my next book.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Well, I have a lot to say. I looked into the bigger publishing companies, but it didn't take long for me to decide that this was the way to go for me. There are so many freedoms with being an indie author... creative freedom, marketing & pr freedom, and pricing freedom. Some things are priceless.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been great. They do so many great things for the indie author, however, the first thing that they did for me was to allow me to publish my books for free. Next, I love the advice Mark gives.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest writing joy for me is creating memerable characters. I love when fans come up to me and say that they can relate to Destinee. I smile, because that's my vision for her.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life. Just being alive, and wanting to live a good, productive life. My children also inspire me. They motivate me to be the best me that I can be. Also, each day that I get up I am thinking about that next character, or the next adventure that Destinee will embark on. That excites me...
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With family mostly. Other than that I try to read something everyday. I'll also watch a little t.v.
What is your writing process?
My process varies with each thing that I write, but for the most part, I think of situations that are interesting, realistic, and true. I then figure out ways to put Destinee into those situations.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My e-reading device of choice is my I-Phone.
