Interview with Esther Byrt

What's the story behind your latest book?
Jackie is a young widow who is haunted by her late husband. She doesn't realize he's "actually" haunting her until she meets a man she can't resist. Strange events happen whenever they are together and gradually escalate to dangerous incidents.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have been a voracious reader all my life. I wrote several books years ago that were rejected by traditional publishers because the story line didn't quite fit their categories. Now I have an opportunity to tell the story I want without having to fit into a category formula.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love letting my imagination have free rein. When I truly get involved with my characters the words flow onto the screen almost by themselves. I love being in that "zone."
What are you working on next?
I am working on a science fiction novel that features a strong female lead and a hot alien man.
Who are your favorite authors?
Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Laurell K. Hamilton, Robert Jordan, Isaac Asimov, Karen Marie Moning, Joe Abercrombie. Okay there are dozens and dozens that I really enjoy reading. I don't think I can list them all.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My alarm clock rings. That's it really. I like sleep. But, once I am up I am excited for my day. I am working on being more organized to increase my word count for the day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read. A lot! I also watch quite a few TV shows. I PVR everything and watch them when I have time. Weekends are quite often my marathon catch-up-on-tv time.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I subscribe to several ebook newsletters and also browse through Amazon, Goodreads and other book sites. A lot of the free ebooks offered aren't great but I have discovered some real gems that way and go on to read the author's other books.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do. It was a science fiction story that was all of 4 pages long when I was about 14 years old. I take it out every now and then and shudder at how bad it was!
What is your writing process?
I plot out most of my scenes in the first part of the book along with the broad strokes of the middle and end before I start writing. I need structure and a target to stay on track.
How do you approach cover design?
I design my own covers (and design for other authors as well) so I start with my vision of the characters and what scene will best showcase the tone of the book. From there it's fire up Photoshop and get to work.
