Interview with Elicia Shreve

Published 2017-06-25.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was in high school at the time, and had the idea that a teacher would find a cursed book that transformed her. I got about halfway through before real life intervened. I have thought about going back to it, but it wouldn't be the same.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a mix of things. I've enjoyed a lot in the young adult sections, though I tend to stick towards horror, science fiction, or modern fantasy. I have never gone wrong with a Stephen King book though.
When did you first start writing?
I first started when I was in elementary school. I'd mainly write poetry and short one paragraph stories then.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When someone tells me that they enjoyed it.
What are you working on next?
I have two projects going right now. Daydreams introduces characters from one of them, though in their past. That's what I've unofficially dubbed the mermaid series. The other one is similarly called the magic series. Of course, I'm always working on shorter stories, and playing with ideas.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King is a long standing favorite, particularly his Dark Tower series. I've also enjoyed Laurell K. Hamilton's books and Charlaine Harris.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, watching movies, watching television, spending time with family. Those are the main things you'll find me doing, though I admit that I watch too much TV sometimes.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I pick a word or two, usually genre or subject matter, and search them.
What is your writing process?
I don't really have a process. I'll have ideas almost any time, so being a homebody helps in that regard.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I ever stayed up all night to read was Charlotte's Web. It was the first book to really draw me into it to the point I lost all track of time. That wasn't the last time, but that first time has stuck with me.
