Interview with Ernest Stambouly

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy shows up when I have accomplished one of two things: Explaining difficult concepts and situations to myself, so that then I can share my thinking with others; discovering something about myself that I was blind to, an act of self-discovery if you will. The latter reveals how we show up to others in the world, which is important in business and socially; it helps relieve frustrations and clear up insecurities when how we see ourselves is inconsistent with how we show up to others.
What do your fans mean to you?
Reaching out to move, touch, insprire and make a difference to someone else is the mojo of life -- for me. Fans are the proof of such accomplishment.
What are you working on next?
I have no idea.
Who are your favorite authors?
Barbara Dewey, Fernando Flores, Robert Solomon, and Edwin A. Abbott
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
To get up, create the next big thing, then see I what I will learn from succeeding or failing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, immersing myself into music composition, offering help to a stranger who wants to start a business or take care of some concern, and spending time with my loved ones.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Through recommendations of people I trust and follow, references from blog posts I find valuable, and during my research when writing my own books.
What is your writing process?
I approach writing in three different ways, and I am still unsure which one is more effective -- but then again, I am not sure either if being effective in writing is super important.
- The first is to compile an anthology of essays, posts and blurbs I had already written and give the compilation a coherent flow.
- The second is to start with a clear objective and start writing (this is mostly for business writing)
- The third is when I feel compelled to write about something, so I start and cannot stop. A hundred pages later, i say to myself, how about I turn this into a book!
How do you approach cover design?
I resist doing it myself and I hire someone who know what they're doing.
What do you read for pleasure?
Philosophy, and out of the ordinary type of content.
When did you first start writing?
Only recently, in the last two years. Before then, writing was not on the top of my daily activities. However, I do remember a few instances when I was a young teenager, I would get inspired to open a notebook (which was not a preferred act for me in school) and start writing something out of the ordinary. Whatever that was then, I know I am enjoying it now.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The "digital revolution" is dramatically changing the world we knew (not as dramatic if you are a Millennial), and thriving in business will require that we begin noticing what we don't need anymore for the sake of unloading costs, obsolete obligations and unnecessary activities. Many systems, applications, and processes that govern our daily work were designed pre-digital technology assumptions, which now are false -- and with a little effort and time, I might be able to tighten that up into a more useful and practical narrative.
