Interview with Xavier Arista

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
When I was a boy, I started with Tom Swift books. And that interested me in Science. In the end, I got a degree in Oceanography. After forty years of exploring the Ocean, I'm now retired. But at one time I held the record for the deepest dive in both a JIM suit and a one-man submersible called a Wasp.
How do you approach cover design?
I talked with friends who had read the first draft. And after a long discussion I hired someone to do the book cover for me.
Why did you write a novel based on the history of the Basques?
The Basques are the original Iberians. Recent DNA based discoveries show the they were the first farmers in Iberia some 5,500 years ago. Most Americans don't even know what tribe they originally came from, but I do. I'm Basque, and my ancestral home is on a mountain overlooking Roncesvalles Pass, on the border between France and Spain. So, it was with a sense of pride that I studied the history of the first Basque king. And then published these two novels.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read novels for pleasure, and I read scientific papers because I find them interesting.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have both a Nook and an I-Pad.
