Interview with Erin Manbeck

What do you read for pleasure?
I will read almost anything. I prefer Fantasy, Fairy-tale, Young Adult, and fable stories but a good Thriller or Romance will work too. If any of my friends find a book really interesting I go ahead and read it as well. I love when we sit around and talk about the parts we loved and the parts we could have done with out.
On the other hand my friends don't always take my advice on a book because I don’t mind being really attached to a great character and then the author kills them off. Yes, it will piss me off but that’s what makes it a good read for me. Usually when I suggest a book to someone their first question is “who dies?”
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I absolutely love my Kindle! I take it with me everywhere. It doesn't help that I'm one of those people who will read the 1st book of a trilogy or series and it doesn't matter if it was good or bad...I have to finish. My kindle gives me that one-click purchase option to the next book and before I know it, I'm in chapter 2.
Describe your desk
I don't actually have one for writing at the house. I carry my laptop to whatever room my 5 year old is screaming for me to join him in so I guess I would say my thighs make an awesome desk.

Now if you are talking about my 9-5 desk…a desk fan so when the air goes out in the bldg for the umpteenth time I don’t pass out. I ‘m surrounded by pictures of my son and my family and friend’s children everywhere. I have a 365 day Irish calendar that every once in a while gives me a good quote or funny that I post up on the wall. There is also a wall with a bunch of ridiculous fortune cookie fortunes that have never come true.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New Jersey so I would say that it definitely puts an edge in my writing. I had parents that stood up for me when I was right but weren't afraid to put me in my place when I was wrong. I live my life that way now. If I'm right you'll know and if I'm wrong I'll be the first to apologize. I mean seriously people, isn't that what being an adult is all about. It also didn't help that I went to a Catholic grammar school where the nuns put the fear of God in me so there are still some subjects I can't help but shy away from. My first book I think you'lll find that the main character is strong, smart, and eventually ready to kick ass.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have read and really enjoyed so many indie author books in the last two years. I have followed their blogs and their Facebook posts that they actually inspired me to go in this direction. I have also seen how this was definitely a starting block for many and that when a book is worth reading…it will succeed in other areas.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love Samantha Young! Especially her "Warriors of Ankh"' trilogy and "Fire Spirits" novels. All of Kristie Cook's books so far. Jenna Bernel's "Fae-Witch Trilogy". Rachel Morgan's "Creepy Hollow' trilogy".Christie Anderson's "The Water Keppers .series. "Veronica Roth, Elle Casey, Demitria Lunetta, Breeana Puttroff, Oh, I am Loving Erica Stevens' "The Survivor Chronicles." I log onto her blog every Monday to read the new chapter she puts out. Chandra Hahn kicks ass! Rebecca Donovan had me sitting on egg shells with her "The Breathing Series."Jenna Elizabeth Johnson's "Otherworld Trilogy". Suzanne Collins, Colleen Hoover, Abbi Glines, Arron Patterson, Ella James, James Patterson, J.K. Rowling, R.R Martin and John Grisham, . Gotta throw in Liliana Hart and Melody Anne (HOT, HOT, HOT)
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My son is my true inspiration, he is my heart. I actually look forward to the craziness he brings to my life with his quick wit, stubborn ways, and the fact that he tells me I am the best mom in the world. He is a mini version of me until he says something like "pull my finger" and then he is his father's child..
My son not only inspires me to get out of bed he inspires me to be more. I want him to grow up and be proud of me and my husband and everything we have accomplished through hard work and dedication. I want him to know that no one is just entitled to things in life...they are earned.
The best nights are the ones when the 3 of us argue over who is smarter, who is funnier, who is whatever. Hands down I win but they never seem to agree.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
When I choose an eBook by an author I haven't heard of before there are a couple of factors I take into consideration. The first being if any of my friends have read it and enjoyed it. If not and I'm skimming through the electronic bookstore the cover definitely pulls me in. Next I read the reviews that others have left. I'm a sucker for a trilogy so I'm always looking for them as well. Unfortunately for my wallet but lucky for some authors even if I don't like the first book I hate not knowing what is eventually going to happen so I end up reading all the books. Damn Obsessive Compulsive behavior.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has made it so that I am not afraid to take on this adventure. It leaves everything in my hands and makes it my responsibility. Being that I have no issue admitting that I am a control freak I like that I am accountable for my own work. Smashwords' guides and tips are about as foolproof as they come but if you still don't think you can do it alone they offer many links giving you options for help. Control freak or not I'm not afraid to say that I won't be shy when it comes to getting help with my cover art.
