Interview with Josette Reuel

What are you working on next?
The Dásreach Council series has a story arc for a minimum of thirteen books and I already have a few novellas added in as well. So, next up is Book 2 - Rogue and Malkum's story.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm an avid reader so I spend a lot of time reading. I have always enjoyed Sci-Fi and Fantasy, but my current passion is anything romance. When not wrapped up in a book (writing or reading), I spend time with my family. My kids are involved in 4-H, so that takes up the majority of the summer months. Mr. Reuel and I love to travel and look forward to when we can travel more extensively.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do not remember my first story, but I have been writing since I was little. My father would joke that I was going to grow up and make him lots of money as a famous author.
What is your writing process?
The writing process for me is evolving. It seems like I learn a new trick every day. For the Finding the Dragon book I found that I really am an outliner type of personality. I worked with my book group and we came up with the basic concept. I then banged it around in my head and came up with the background for why the Dásreach would be searching for their mates and planned out the series arc. Now, for each book I am outlining the basic story. Some items on the outline are one sentence and some are a whole scene. The outline is a way to get my ideas on paper. It's rough and can change. My husband is a huge part of the process as well. He gets to hear everything I write. At the end of the writing day, we sit down and read what I wrote and then discuss what was written and correct any errors that are found.
How do you approach cover design?
Mr. Reuel and I were both Art majors when we first attended college. Therefore, I have a very artistic temperament and thought process for anything visual. I think a cover must have a unique appeal, something that makes it stand out from the crowd. It needs to pop off the page at the reader. I am a big proponent for using color and abstract designs. It is also very important that the cover connects to the story. I love when you are reading a book and the the items on the cover give a visual to items in the book. With the Dásreach series, each Dásreach has a unique tattoo, so this tattoo is on the cover of each book. The tattoo was specifically designed for this series. The last thing that I believe is important is that books in a series have similar covers. That you can look at the cover and say, "Oh, that's from X series."
What is your e-reading device of choice?
With my smartphone I have the Kobo, Nook, and Kindle apps. In the past I have used all three. However, I now own a Kindle Fire and I'm very happy with it. I will say that I still love the feel of holding a paper book and buy my favorite authors and series in print.
What's the story behind your latest book?
A couple years back I met a group of women on Facebook and we started our own private book club. A while ago their was a chain story post going around and several of us participated. The more I read and thought about it, the more I thought about how it could be a story and how all of the gals in the group could participate and help to build the characters and base storyline. It was a way to have fun and include everyone in an activity together since we live all over the US and Europe. Granted the final outcome of this project, Finding the Dragon, doesn't resemble those early thoughts in the posts, but it has been an amazing journey with the Book Worms ;)
What motivated you to become an indie author?
In truth, I'm a bit of a control freak. I like being able to make decisions and implement them when it comes to my work. I worked as a Technical Communicator for 15+ years, so creating my own covers and book files is pretty simple for me. I've published software manuals through my past employers, so I knew the basics.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to create. The process of working out the details of the characters and piecing together their lives for a story is a real rush for me. But, I think the best part of writing is when you type that last word and are able to share your "baby" with friends. When they come back with true praise... there's nothing better than that feeling.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans... readers... those that support me are the reason that I can do what I love to do. Without them, my dream would get nowhere. I write for me, but they are the reason I publish. All of my gratitude goes out to my fans.
