Interview with Rebecca Croteau

Describe your desk
I have a longish, black desk. Towards the back, it has a shelf just high enough that my bins of random ink samples fit underneath; on top of the shelf, it also has my bottled inks. To one side, I have a few toys from Neil Gaiman's Sandman run. I have a handmade pottery bowl that contains a few special treasures, like the mala I used to pray when my mother was sick, and the "wish" coupon someone gave me when I was working in a cafe, years and years ago.
What authors inspire you?
Tammara Webber; Jennifer Crusie; Lani Diane Rich/Lucy March; Neil Gaiman; Charles de Lint.
What originally sparked your passion for writing?
It's hard to say, because I don't remember a time when I didn't tell stories. To my mind, writers are storytellers who prefer to write their stories down instead of repeating them orally. From there, though, I often ask myself why I am interested in publishing stories, because that requires a level of exhibitionism that just writing does not.

I read some research today about what happens to our brains when we read a story that follows the "traditional" form, where there is an introduction, a problem, a climax, and a solution. The activity in our physical brains is intense, and our reactions are huge. Storytellers quite literally change the world. Which means that writing stories, and writing them the way I write them, changes the world.
