Interview with Geoffrey Ashton

What is your writing process?
I start with a sentence and end up 90,000 words later. The books have a life of their own. I find this technique leads to a fluidity in the book that is not possible with pre planned works. The technique aids rapid change of direction to keep the reader guessing. There is nothing worse that picking up a book and knowing the ending after the first page.
How do you approach cover design?
The cover must relate to the book and be honest with the purchaser
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I have always liked the thriller genre with an international flavour such as The Bourne Series, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
What do you read for pleasure?
The New Yorker and selected novels. I particularly enjoyed 'The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet'
What is your e-reading device of choice?
As I own Apple appliances I usually gravitate to Kindle
Describe your desk
I find I write best when travelling, away from the mundane everyday routine. I usually write on a notebook which allows me to select a quiet peaceful place, indoor or outdoor
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book 'The Ryan Saga', soon to be published traces a letter with a hidden message secreted in a WWII aircraft and later purchased for refurbishment. The start of a diffuse and complicated trail which leads to a surprise ending.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have travelled extensively with my career and have probably seen more than most see in ten lifetimes. Easy to translate life experiences to book format in an interesting story.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I am never bored
What are you working on next?
Having just completed 'The Ryan Saga', a short sabbatical and then into a few ideas running around in my head.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
There is always a challenge, if not find one or make one.
