Interview with Kara Skye Smith

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I began self-publishing after writing a novel on Myspace. I kept adding entries until I had a novel written. I found out about NaNoWriMo, and then compiled the novel - since it was basically written in the same month - during the NaNoWriMo competition. I didn't finish the 'race', because I had started it in such a different way, with Wrimos, but I learned about all the self-publishing options that exist through their encouragement pages, tweets, and email. I had published a children's book the traditional way, years before, but have yet to receive any income from it, though it makes a good income each year. Apparently this is due to change-overs that took place internally, buy-outs and things. I felt I'd have ultimate control with Indie publishing and have started my own label, Fae-tality Publishing. I've met my goal this year for Indie's - at least 2 titles per year - and plan to increase the business aspect by adding featured authors. If you are looking to guest blog or add a blog to your blog tour, the focus is children's literature, picture e-books, and YA. http://fae-tality.blogspot.com.
What are you working on next?
I am writing Willow, a cyber-punk dystopian children's book. I prewrote it at Camp NaNoWriMo, and intend to now write it during NaNo's November session. I am also finishing the final edits to The Nebulizer Potion and the Electric Compass, which is already up, here at Smashwords, for Pre-Order.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Coffee with a dash of cinnamon. I am enjoying an Italian espresso at the moment. Also, work that I love to do and a quote I like:
Do what you LOVE
and you'll never
WORK a day
in your LIFE.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
For awhile I concentrated on fellow Indie or self-published authors, as keeping with the theory that 'we should stick together' and be supportive of each other; but, I have to admit I notice the pop culture books and the marketing efforts of major publishers as much as the next person. So, I then find the books that have been in recent movie buzz, or fantasy genre that suddenly shine with popularity - word of mouth from the readers i know with the best, funniest, or most books read book lists. I like sample downloads to remind me which books to buy when I am buying books.
How do you approach cover design?
I have videos on my Youtube channel if you'd like to see my cover design approach. I didn't show it all in one video, but in the playlist Create A Picture E-Book (although it includes covers of novels and chapter books, too) most steps in my process are viewable. First, I create art with pencil, pen, watercolor, or watercolor pencils. Then I add some digital effects, fonts, and a few other steps are included in the video series like coding the description at Kindle's bookshelf. Its one of the things I really like about being an ebook author that I did not get to do with my first children's book. What do you read for pleasure?
Right now I am reading a book about Jane Austen's character Mr. Darcy; but the author is contemporary and she wrote the book from Mr. Darcy's point of view. In looking up the title, I found Mr. Darcy Vampyre, and Werewolf Mr. Darcy. I thought that should sound more like what I am reading since I just finished up my vampire trilogy's third - and final - novel. I was working on the book trailer at the time and now finding those books is a must. They fit with my attitude during the creation of Anthology the trailer. While doing it all myself and hearing I might not be doing it (all) 'right'; I imagined the question often asked whenever you tell people you are reading (anything:) Mr. Darcy, "Where do you think you would find your Mr. Darcy?" I don't really want to know the answer to that. I'm pretty sure I know.
