Interview with Fay Johnson

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My first 10 years were spent in suburban Sydney, NSW - later we moved to a sleepy little seaside town in northern NSW - and after that to the southern downs in Queensland where I met my first husband. After we were married 3 years we moved about 100 miles to the outer Brisbane area. As I've had an eventual life which I am in the process of writing down, all of these places have had a huge impact upon me. From a "big city" childhood to a tiny fishing village full of restless teenage troubled years to a smaller provincial city where I reside now, I'm quite sure everywhere I've lived has had an enormous influence upon my writing, in the past and right now and I'm sure in the future too.
What's the story behind your latest book, "Pinky"?
"Pinky" is a brand new fairy story about a little girl who finds a pink spotted dragon egg. As I've always loved dragons I just had to write a story with one in it, this one has taken me a long time to finish as I had to find a fresh "baddie" - which took ages to figure out. This "baddie" Green Speckled Face is a combination of my sister and my Mother; my sister as she had orange freckles and my Mother as she was a super cook. But I must point out my Mother NEVER looked like Green Speckled Face. But maybe my sister did a few times.
Who are your favorite authors?
An easy question, Diana J. Gabaldon who writes the "Outlander" series, and George RR Martin, who writes the "Game of Thrones" series. I have all their books, and can read them over and over again, always finding something new and fresh.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a short story for a monthly magazine. It was about a girl and her old dog.
When did you first start writing?
I was around 14-15 years old when I started. First with a diary then short stories.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read, and garden, plus sometimes even do some housework (that's such a dirty word...LOL)
How do you approach cover design?
Simple and to the point is best, in my mind.
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything at all.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It sets one free, to explore a world that is inside ones head, to free all those imagined characters and then to polish it all up and publish it. It's extremely satisfying!
What is your writing process?
I write in the mid mornings, or late at night - or even sometimes when I have a sleepless night I get up and writing seems to destress me.

A wee pink creature was standing on wobbly legs in its nest on top of its broken egg, and was perkily looking about its surroundings with curiosity. It was bald, with a shiny pink body, a paler long skinny tail and a short pink snout. ‘Not a bird,’ thought Isabella! But - it did have small wings, though they were held tightly folded in against the back of its quivering body.

Steve wanted to give his small sister Isabella the perfect gift for her birthday, a dragon ride! He stalked the Wild Dragon very carefully and waited until it had dozed in the sun – then just as carefully tossed a strong rope over its head and hung on tight.
