Interview with David Barton

How do you approach cover design?
I like color and a good picture that tells me a little about the book, author or content. The title should also grab my attention and have some personal appeal. Most people approach a new book with the question of "whats in it for me?" They want to know what benefit they are going to gain by reading the material. The cover should speak to that. I try to incorporate those ideas when I design the cover.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1.) The Bible - I have read the Bible regularly for most of my life and it has probably had the most impact over me, more than any other book.
2.) Psychology: Australia and New Zealand Edition. This was one of the text books I studied for my undergrad psychology degree. It really opened my eyes to the many interesting ideas uncovered by modern psychological research.
3.) How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie - one of the first self help books I ever read and one which was influential in my own journey regarding influencing people.
4.) Dr Seuss Sleep Book - the first Dr Seuss book I read, but not the last. I picked it up one day and started reading it to my daughter. I couldn't put it down, the rhyme and non-words really captured my attention and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
5.) Bounce - one of the latest books I read. I really enjoyed this book as it emphasizes the importance of practice and less reliance on talent to reach the top of your field.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly non fiction books as I like to learn new ideas when I read. I seldom read fiction as I prefer to watch movies or TV series for this sort of input.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My PC or my smart phone.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Good question. I have tried setting up my own web site, but that was not very effective. I found probably the best method was to use a site like or to market the eBook. At the end of the day, I have probably not been very proactive in this area.
Describe your desk
When I am working it is usually populated with my materials. When I am done for the day, I like to clear it up and leave it tidy for the next time.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up all over South Africa. We moved around a lot. We had many interesting experiences growing up and saw a heap of cool places. I like to keep my writing interesting and creative. I enjoy coming up with new ideas. Possibly the way I write now is due to the effect of my upbringing.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first eBook in 2011, but I was writing way before that. However, in 2011 I wrote my first publicly available work so this was a milestone in my life regarding writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Currently I am working on a short eBook on Persuasion Psychology. I am specifically looking at reciprocation and how people use it or can use it to improve their sales, business or just get more out of life.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like the idea of self publishing. Also it doesn't require a long arduous process to get material to print. By the time many books make it to the print market, the information is years old. Indie authors can get their work on the market so much faster and with much less stress.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords have got excellent systems in place to get works published and distributed online. Their eBook conversion processes are also very comprehensive and they take a lot of the hassle from the authors in getting their work ready for publication.
