Interview with Dane Cramer

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in rural Somerset County in Western PA. It was located in the middle of a farming community. I was surrounded by hills, woods, cows and fields of hay and corn. Life seemed pretty simple then and I believe my writing often reflects that ideal place and time.
When did you first start writing?
I still have my first rejection letter - from the 3rd grade! I wrote a poem and submitted it to Scholastic Magazine. I had hoped they would publish it, but they returned the poem saying that they didn't publish student's work. It really didn't upset me. As a matter of fact, I was thrilled to get a response from them!
What's the story behind your latest book?
When "The Da Vinci Code" came out I began to think of writing a book that defended Christianity. There are many apologetic works out there, but I decided to write one in a novel format. My latest book is a mystery/thriller that is really wrapped around a Christian apologetic theme.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
By the time I was ready to publish, it seemed that the publishing world was radically different. I felt like it had so much more to offer than before. I knew there were risks involved, but I loved being in control of the final product.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I self-published my first book in 2007. So much has changed since then. Smashwords has allowed me to get my work out in formats that were previously unavailable to me. It was exciting to share with my audience that they could get my latest book in an array of formats!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I think the highest compliment anyone ever said to me was, "I couldn't put it down!" It's exciting to be able to formulate my thoughts and convey them in a way that entertains and enlightens an audience.
What do your fans mean to you?
Every review - every email - every contact that I get from someone who has read and enjoyed my work has rewarded me beyond words.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love the outdoors. I love backpacking and going "off the grid" for a while. Being in the woods stirs my pencil to begin writing again.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I carry my Droid smart phone everywhere I go. So, it has become my reader of choice. However, because I spend so much "windshield time" in my full time job, I now listen to more books than I read!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media has really helped. If I can get just ten social media contacts to repost an announcement or blog, I can multiply my exposure many, many times over. It is staggering just how many people can be reached through social media.
Describe your desk
Okay. My desk is pretty cluttered. There are crumbs in my keyboard and stuff is stacked everywhere. Hanging above my desk is my backpacking hammock. Whenever I get tired, I just climb up on it and take a snooze!
