Interview with Frank Homan

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
As long as I can remember I have had a deep desire to explore the unknown. In my case, the unknown is studies in the areas of inner reality and spiritual truths. From child (a long time ago for me) I was always torn between interests in science & technology and spiritual, sometimes mystical, avenues. Rather than choosing between the two, I traveled both paths, becoming a computer consultant, from which I am now retired, and pursuing intense studies in various new age and religious fields. I have read widely on subjects as varied as mathematics (especial number theory), history (especially the Roman Empire and WWII), cosmology, string theory, as well as graphology, numerology, meditation, Christian studies and a variety of other subjects.
What is your writing process?
After many years of working with various forms of expression, I have found that I have an inner sense of when inspiration is ripe for me to harvest. Ideas for subjects are no problem since I write non-fiction, I have a list so long that it will never be exhausted. I take the subjects as I feel moved to from within and write. I don't always write in the order in which the material will appear in the book. I almost always have an outline and have my chapter and section titles written. Then I go to the area that I am drawn to on any given day and let the energy flow. I often need to either take a break from a book either to consider some specific point or to get away from it for a fresh perspective. Because of that I usually have multiple books, at various stages, going at once.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read quite a bit. I have been a life-long reader. The vast majority of my reading has been non-fiction. I like to collect quotes which I find to be an interesting way to view the differences in the way people view life. I also like to travel with my wife. Our favorite way to travel is by taking car trips. We have been all over the US and Canada by car. Favorite destinations are anywhere that we can experience nature - national parks, mountains, deserts, and ocean (or Great Lakes) views. I have been to Eastern and Western Europe, Asia and a couple Caribbean islands. All my travels have left deep and indelible memories within me.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The book "Two Against the North" by Farley Mowat. I was quite young, I'm not sure the precise age. I was spellbound! It's probably what started me on my life-long reading habit. I lived in a small town and there was not a great deal to keep a young person entertained, so I turned to reading. It wasn't long before I turned more toward non-fiction. That book took me into a world that was nearly as real as my own life. Every challenge of the boys in the story left me exhausted as though I was there with them fighting the same circumstances.
How do you approach cover design?
I look for something that will (hopefully) communicate some vital essence of the book. Since I write non-fiction, there is usually something that stands out about what I am writing, whether abstract or concrete, although distilling it down to some specific imagery can be a challenge.
What are your four favorite books, and why?
The Bible - For so many reasons that it would take a book to do them justice.
The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov - The incredible scope of time and distance is nearly mind altering.
The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene - Because the universe is something to behold in awe and wonder.
I Claudius by Robert Graves - This is best of fiction and history combined.
So many more that I can scarcely believe it.
What do you read for pleasure?
Do you mean that one can read for any other reason?
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town. If my memory is correct, I believe there were about 600-700 people there at the time. For a variety of reasons, I felt isolated and looked inward to find ways of keeping my equilibrium. This forced me to think outside of the normal framework of my surroundings and circumstances.
When did you first start writing?
I was in my twenties. I wrote and self published materials for classes that I taught. It wasn't until I was 36 that I actually had a book published. That was 1986.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Since I have several books in the process of being written, I'll consolidate the idea into the story behind my journey with Numerology. I was teaching Handwriting Analysis at a New Age bookstore and during a teacher's meeting, the manager wanted to know if someone would teach numerology. Being young, cocky and opinionated, I made some disparaging remark about numerology. Someone who was a numerologist responded by asking me what I knew of the subject. When I admitted that it wasn't much, he challenged me to learn something about it before bad-mouthing it. I took up the challenge and read several books. At first I was reading with the intent to find those things which proved my point. The more I read and worked through numerology charts, the more I became intrigued. I read some 130-150 numerology books and papers. The reason I read so many is that I was searching for something that I instinctively knew was missing from the books I was reading. One evening I was walking with a friend, talking about numerology and telling him that I felt like I was very close to some breakthrough with numerology. As we were standing by my apartment building, about to leave each other, I had an extremely powerful and clear vision of a numerology chart. The chart was similar in some ways to an astrology chart but based entirely on numerology principles. Sovana was born. It took me years to figure it all out and I'm sure there's still more there than I currently know. Several of the books that I am currently working on are Sovana related.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It seemed like a great way to reach people and it certainly seems like the direction that publishing is going. Traditional publishing seems a bit like a lottery. You either luck out with the right company and literary agent or you don't. Independent publishing of ebooks gives the author much more control over their process.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I think Smashwords has done a terrific job of providing the venue and the tools to make independent publishing a reality. I have tried epublishing through another venue and became so frustrated that I almost gave up the whole idea. Almost by accident, I found Smashwords and was delighted to find a way to publish my books with an organization that truly supports me in my efforts.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to give form to my thoughts and discoveries. I would continue to work and research and discover even if I could not write about it, because I find great joy in learning and discovering. Being able to write about it and share it with others is a very major bonus.
