Interview with Chris "Fish" Fisher

What inspired you to write this book?
As both a high school football coach and business consultant, I have been privy to get a 1st hand experience to what's going on inside the minds of athletes. I have a passion for helping athletes excel whether its on or off the field. Seeing the constant financial struggles of athletes made me want to help provide a new outlook on their future. I recognized that there was a need for them to receive some proper instruction and I believe the book provides me the ability to give that much need instruction on this pressing issue.
Why do you believe professional sports don’t make millionaires?
Being a true millionaire is more about the mindset than it is about the actual money that is being made. There are many well known businessmen and authors who will attest to this fact. Most millionaires have a repeatable system that they follow to experience financial success. The problem with professional athletes is that their system for making money ends once their playing days are over. If they don't have viable options that will recreate their athletic financial success, then they will find themselves over extended financially because they are no longer able to support the lifestyle they once lived.
What are some common myths about professional athletes believe?
#1: Once I make become a professional athlete, my financial problems will end. #2: I am too young to start thinking about retirement #3: Living on credit just to show I have a lot of money (AKA Show OUT) is a way of life. #4: Being a professional athlete makes me financially secure for life. #5 I will see all the money in my agreed upon contract.
What are you working on next?
We are setting up a book tour for the fall/winter of 2014. I am also developing more training programs and seminars for my company Elite 35 Sports to help provide athletes with the needed business training. We also will be releasing the 2nd part of this book series in 2015.
Why is it important for aspiring athletes to read this book?
It possess a story line that every athlete can relate to. Athletes will not only learn how to avoid financial destruction, but also receive proven business strategies that they can implement right now. It will help aspiring professional athletes move in the right direction once they get to the professional ranks. It will also give them find their competitive advantage on how to deal with the business side of sports.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My drive to build a legacy for my family and my God given mission to fulfill my purpose in life.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a business coach to professional athletes and business owners. I also coach high school football in Dallas, TX. Even more than these activities, I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter.
What are some of the things that negatively affect the financial success of athletes that are not talked about?
Some of the things that negatively affect their finances are bad investments, acquiring too many depreciable assets and expenses, keep up with the luxurious celebrity lifestyle, trying to live up to "I'm the man " attitude .
What is your writing process?
My writing process is similar to what I was taught in high school. I start with generating an outline of the different topics to be discussed in the book. I follow that with writing out general ideas on how I want to deliver the content. Once I get to this point, the late nights and random writing moments begin. I have to keep a notepad with me at all times for any ideas that may pop into my head. Nothing is written in order and all chaos has broken out until I get the 1st draft complete. Once the first draft is complete, I go through several rounds of editing and review with my editors, who i desperately need. While all of this is going on i'm working on my promotional campaign to make sure I at least get one reader for the book.
What do you read for pleasure?
Being a business strategist for professional athletes, I am constantly reading "self-help" books, sports articles, and biographies of people who I admire. I enjoy every minute of it!!!
Describe your desk
Let's just say my wife doesn't like going near it!!
