Interview with Richard L. Foland Jr.

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
We were nomadic. I grew up in various places in SW Pa and SE Ohio. Having moved around jumping from town to town and state to state might be why I write in more than one genre.
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything and anything, although I probably spend more time reading fiction.
Who are your favorite authors?
Piers Anthony, C S Lewis, Paul Cornell, Douglas Adams, Connie Willis and so very many more.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
The Samsung Galaxy Tablet. I have five different e-reader apps. The kindle app is the only one that really bothers me.
What sort of things bother you?
Proprietary formats that limit your choices (Kindle), politicians, kids who disrespect their mother and burnt toast.
What is your writing process?
I sit at my computer and just write. I let the characters and stories flow out and I just enjoy the ride. I usually use place holders for names until I can find one in a baby name book that fits the character. I also use them to mark sections to be expanded during the editing process.
How did you develop your writing process?
I went to Clarion University for Computer Science and rather than do flow charts and whatever I would just sit at a terminal and type code. Then I would debug it and get it to work. Then I would do the flow charting and what not. I write much the same way only I skip the last bit.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The ride, as I discover what is going to happen next. It's like playing an Infocom game (interactive fiction) where I make a decision and type something which causes the characters to play out their parts only I'm both the player and the programmer.
Did you ever try traditional publishing before you became an indie author?
Back in the nineties I submitted a novel to Virgin Publishing's New Adventures range of Doctor Who books. I was rejected, very politely, in a letter that basically said my writing was good but my story was too dependent on TV Doctor Who.
What are you working on next?
I am working on several things but the two that I will be giving the most attention are a inspirational non-fiction book called "Walk with God" and a Fantasy based on the bedtime stories I told my daughter Kayleigh when she was little. All the stories were called "Kayleigh and the Caterpillar" and so will the book.
