Interview with Forrest Nelson

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, the first story I ever wrote was when I was in college in the early seventies. It was about a young Native-American man who moved into a small, rural town and became embroiled in a clash between people living in the town and inhabitants of a nearby Native-American reservation. He was victimized by a ruthless sheriff even though he was not involved in the fracas. Through a series of plot twists, he finally becomes the new sheriff and terrorizes the townsfolk. Sort of an "absolute power" corruption story.
What is your writing process?
I get inspired, I sit down and write. Sometimes I use the keyboard, most often I utilize my Dragon speaking program. Later, I go back and insert the proper words, punctuation, etc. When it hits me, I need to get it down asap before I lose it.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a general design idea and let my professional cover designer do the art. I don't have any talent--whatsoever--when it comes to artwork, so I trust her. Found her on Mark's List by the way.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Da Vinci Code, well-written, entertaining and thought-provoking.
Dante's Inferno, scared the hell out of me.
To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the best reads ever.
Fantastic Voyage, first book I ever read "front to back" (eighth grade).
Princess of Mars-- eleven of them, loved the story and was great escape.
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything. If I don't enjoy it, I won't read it. I'm joking of course. I like to read action novels that have twists. Da Vinci Code, Bourne series, etc. I also love to read sci-fi, but it has to be good quality stuff..
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I just finished creating my account at Smashwords and haven't even finished uploading my file yet, so I don't have any results. I have had Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts for quite some time and have done some work on laying out a foundation for my platform and trying to build my brand. We'll see if it I am any good at it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I misspent my youth in Santa Monica, CA and moved to the Clear Lake area--Lakeport, CA--in the seventh grade. Gave me a strong sense of self-reliance and a love of being active. One of my current projects is devoted to that time in my life, and that time in the world--early sixties.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing about 2010 when a co-worker suggested I write a book about the stories I had been telling about my experiences in casino surveillance.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Like a previous question, the book is about the true stories I experienced during my thirty years of casino surveillance. It is full of incredible characters and almost unbelievable events. It also takes the reader into this fascinating covert world where people got away with amazing scams, as well as showing the reader how to be a little safer when they visit Vegas.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Being an indie author was the most direct and sure-fire way to have a presence in the market. The amount of material available that provides assistance to new authors made the decision so much easier. Plus, I get to keep more royalties--if I ever get any!
