Interview with Funmi Olutile

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I came across Smashwords in my search for how to self publish my books. Its so easy to work with Smashword in achieving your goals as a new writer.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is when i get feedback especially from people who know me and could not really picture me in that light of a writer. I always enjoy the surprise element. I also appreciate when a total stranger recounts to me the value that my book has added to them.
What do your fans mean to you?
What can one do without fans? My fans are the greatest reason why i task myself to produce the best that i can at any given point in time.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on projects that will suit the younger generation. I believe they are our future and if we can get them to fall in love with life and see the world through the windows of book pages, there would be a lot less hate in the world.
Who are your favorite authors?
From a young age, i have loved Danielle Steel and Jeffrey Archer. Their writing styles opened my eyes to the world of reading and subsequently writing.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Love does. To know that i am needed and loved keeps me going.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Earning a living and when less busy with life, reading. Oh and soap operas!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I start by reading the story line but i especially love to read true stories.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, boy meets girl, girl meets boy. I was 13/14 years old.
How do you approach cover design?
Your cover design needs to be innovative and interesting. A sight for sore eyes!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love to read on Kindle
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have gotten more value from organising a book launch
Describe your desk
Argghhh. I think it depends on the mood i'm in. Usually filled with lots of paper, jottings, reminders etc but the funny thing is i know exactly where every item is
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Lagos mostly sheltered and so i got to spend a lot of time indoors except when i was in boarding school. I think this really influenced my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I was a teenager. Probably 13/14.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Inspiration from a deep yearning i have had to be involved in making movies. I am still work in progress though but slowly and steadily getting there.
What is your writing process?
I just pour out on my gadget. I then go over what i have put down and thereafter send to my sisters to edit.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I cant remember the title but it was Mills and boons. I think it turned me into a hopeless romantic!
