Interview with Michael Minick

When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in junior high, although I never published anything. I wrote science fiction stories mostly, but like George in Back to the Future, kept them to myself and eventually lost them altogether. While in college I tried to publish short stories, but I didn't handle the rejection well and pursued more "practical" opportunities. Over the years I had ideas, but that evil demon "Procrastination" kept haunting me and no action was taken. Although I'm still fighting that evil demon "Procrastination", ebooks have given me the opportunity to take action and see some of my dreams become reality.
Which author had the greatest impact it had on you?
For me it was Dr. Seuss. Not only did he impact me when I was young but I re-read the books to my children and fell in love with them all over again. His imagination and the way he mesmerized children with his sometimes nonsensical rhymes was fascinating and at one time I wanted to be him, but no one can be him. We can only learn from him. Stinky Socks first came to mind as a nonsensical rhyming story I told my boys at bedtime- until I realized I couldn't compete with Dr. Seuss, at least not yet.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Imagination. I am just beginning to tap the imagination I once had as a child. Although I may still be a little rough with my writing and conveying that imagination to the reader, when I sit down to write I get the creative juices flowing and it is exciting, scary and invigorating all at the same time. I'm going to continue to write because it is a release and a new, exciting part of my life.
What's the story behind Stinky Socks?
It started 15-20 years ago when my boys were young and I had read through all the Dr. Seuss books several times. I started making up stories and the one they liked the most was "Stinky Socks", but it wasn't exactly like the Stinky Socks I have published here. Knowing nothing about soccer until I married my Greek wife, I studied, became a fan and encouraged my children to play. Both of my sons started playing organized soccer when they were three and four years old and played through high school and received college soccer scholarships. During that time I coached, managed and even acted as club president for a brief time. The current version of Stinky Socks evolved out of that love for soccer and the lessons learned from team sports, not only on the field but in real life. Life is much more than a game, but I believe sports have their place in a child's life and can help shape their future. I combined the original Stinky Socks idea with my love for soccer, updated it for a slightly more mature audience, and added a bit of adventure (more in upcoming adventures) and created a series that will hopefully entertain and create enough excitement that will allow me to donate to several soccer organizations with every download.
What are you working on next?
The next Stinky Socks adventure, of course. The first Stinky Socks provides a background and introduction to the characters and the second adventure will continue to develop the characters, add more adventure and have a few surprises.
