Interview with C. F. Francis

What is your e-reading device of choice?
Believe it or not, I'm still partial to my old Nook. I guess I just got use to the weight of the thing. Makes a good weapon, too. I also read on my smart phone as well as my iPad.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love romantic suspense! Alpha male with a protective side. Strong female lead who can take care of herself. A mystery to be solved. There needs to be some tension between the two but also a strong attraction...and a happy ending. If we can't have a happy ending in a romance then all that romance is wasted. Right?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth and networking through friends and social media.
Describe your desk
Cluttered but still organized.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Born and raised in Florida. My novels take place in different locations in Florida. The beaches, the heat, the sand that feels like silk between your toes...what better place to set a romance novel?
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing for years but in a business office. Reading has always been a love of mine. I would walk for miles to get the the library each weekend when I was a kid. I started writing my first novel a few years ago for fun and was encouraged to publish by friends who read it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It started out as something to fill my time and create characters I wanted to spend time with. Friends encouraged me to publish because they enjoyed the characters and plot, as well.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Knowing just one person enjoyed the plot and characters.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I would write without fans just because I enjoy the process but without fans there is no reason to publish.
Who are your favorite authors?
So many...Heather Graham, Nora Roberts, Jayne Ann Krentz, Elizabeth Lowell, Julie Garwood, are just a few.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I actually work full time. When I'm not working or writing I enjoy the beach and traveling with my husband. We very much enjoy road trips - one of my favorites is to the Florida Keys. The Overseas Highway is breathtaking.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually suggestions made based on previous purchases.
How do you approach cover design?
I use an ebook cover and formatting company. Based on suggestions I give them they submit mock-ups and we go from there.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
"Angels Fall" and "Birthright" by Nora Roberts (nobody writes dialogue like Ms. Roberts). 'Shadow & Silk' by Elizabeth Lowell (love Dani & Shane). Heather Grahams series "Krewe of Hunters" (the most interesting paranormal, romantic suspense series). Julie Garwood's "The Bride" (absolutely the best romantic, suspense set in ancient Highlands of Scotland). The characters in each are different but touched and, therefore, stayed with me long after I finished the books. I have reread them all many times. Each have a mystery to be solved and the romance was just perfect.
Why do you write?
First for pleasure. Sometimes it's difficult when I'm stuck on the direction of the plot or the right way to express what the character is trying to relate but for the most part for the shear joy of expression.
What is your writing process?
I keep a book with ideas, then work on an outline. Next comes the first draft, then the second, etc.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first book I stayed up all night reading was a thriller by Robert Ludlum, The Chancellor Manuscript. I was hooked on him and was then introduced to Clive Cussler. I read every thing they wrote. I realized after The Chancellor Manuscript that there were authors out there that could make you loose yourself in the pages. My tastes have changed a little since and I've migrated to suspense with the right balance of romance.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has given me the opportunity to share the "friends" I create.
What are you working on next?
A sequel to Sanctuary Island. The working title is Lovers Key. Some of the secondary characters, one in particular, will step up as the hero in this novel. The original characters from Sanctuary Island will stick around, though. They were too much fun to write about to push out of the story altogether.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The new day. What else?
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not really. I'm sure it was a short story in high school. It mustn't have been all that impressive or I would remember it.
What do you hope readers take away from your novels?
Just that they had fun reading it. I write characters I want to spend time with and put them in a story that will interest me. I hope they feel the same way.
What's the story behind your latest book?
A former Special Forces commander literally runs into a woman being hunted by a hired assassin. It is set in steamy Southwest Florida and the tropical heat isn't the only thing steaming up the pages. There are some twists and turns and some interesting secondary characters that I plan to bring back in future novels.
