Interview with Gavin Tonks

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Zambia and grew up in the then Rhodesia now Zimbabwe, where I am truly grateful for some great teachers who taught me how to learm.

My formative years were moulded by being able to visit beautiful farms, and historic caves where unknown people left their pots and paintings on the cave walls, and very few people would ever see these sites.

I finished my schooling in South Africa and tried to start writing but moved into the creative arts instead, stydying painting, pottery, sculpure and printing before doing an internship to become a shoe designer.
When did you first start writing?
I publishd my first poetry book in the 1970's and started writing labouriously by hand which was an almost impossible task for me. Becoming a mentor for small business I was asked to write articles for print and online sites, I also wrote reports and project proposals which had to be easily read and that was a big learning curve to understand how people read and uderstood the written word.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I am writing 'Gods at War with Peace' a group of equids need to save human kind from the gods who are fighting to rule aquarius
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given away a good number of 24 hour survival guide which is great as the feedback I have received is very positive
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to let people see the pictures in my mind, or share my experiences on their road to sucess
What are you working on next?
I have an extension of my story as a Vampire story
Who are your favorite authors?
Clive Barker, Lindholme, Donaldson, May and many more
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I was shot 6 times and so every day I have is one I should not have had this makes living special
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work as a mentor, and ride my horse
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have not been reading lately focusing on my book
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
yes I as a child I wrote a story, the banana that lost its skin, and then my first complete story which was lost in a flood was about a barnacle that witnesses a ufo landing
What is your writing process?
I just write and write and then read and write I am very focused and chop my stories into sections and just plod away, ask people to read and try and make the writing better
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I have read prodigeously but the first book I was given as a present was the ship that flew, was a very empowering moment, that a person gave me something that they knew I would enjoy

I am a designer by profession

I Love Science Fiction and Fantasy
