Interview with Gabriel Common

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've been a creative writer since I was a child. I love to tell and write stories, when I was in the 8th grade I started working on my first novel and from that day on I knew I wanted to do that for a living.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has helped get my book out on multiple platforms.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Entertaining and inspiring readers with my work.
What do your fans mean to you?
I'm writing for them, not myself. The gift of story telling isn't for the story teller it's for the listeners. Without people to enjoy your work what would be the point of creating it.
What are you working on next?
A screenplay for a TV pilot, a book of short short stories composed by myself along with 9 other indie story tellers, and the 3rd book in the Phantom saga.
Who are your favorite authors?
Tim Lahaye, Ray Bradbury and Stephen King.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My potential, at this moment I'm struggling to get where I need to be. My life is a mess and I'm always alone, but the fact that I know that I have a chance for a good future is what gets me up and working so hard every day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working my part time job, and thinking about writing, or drinking when I have the opportunity.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
From other story tellers I come across.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
That was so long ago, but I do remember the first book I wrote back in 8th grade. It was a love story, a real Romeo and Juliet type story but it was based in an alternate world and one side was good and the other was evil.
What is your writing process?
I have such a unique process that people began to call me the dark writer. When I write I do it in a setting with no light. If I can, I make my surroundings pitch black with the only light coming from my computer screen. I play my music and drink coffee or wine depending on the time of the day. When I'm writing like this I am able to get in a certain mind set where nothing else matters, the world around me disappears and the worries of my live are gone. The only thing that is real is the fantasy that is playing out in my head. In this state I can write 12 hours straight.
