Interview with Andreas Michael Theodorou

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Cyprus as a member of a God fearing and Greek speaking family; this explains partially the fact that whatever I have written or whatever I may write in the future, will never raise serious claims on literary excellence. On the other hand, the fact that English is not my home language, makes me very careful about what I say or write and how I say or write it. So in an attempt to put pen to paper, or keystrokes to the screen, I am in a way doubly handicapped due to the issue of language proficiency and the speed at which I can express my thoughts.
When did you first start writing?
The book "A Grain of Sand", was my first, albeit reluctant attempt, to write anything beyond a management report or office memorandum. Totally out of the blue, three years ago and while I was enjoying my retirement years, I found myself under serious pressure and dare I say coercion by my wife and close friends, to put into writing the theory which I developed and discussed with them, regarding the Creation and existence of a real God. I must admit though, writing the book made me realize, contrary to my initial reservations, that writing is a very worthy vocation. I expect, in a few weeks when the pains of authorship and publishing are forgotten, that I will most probably try again my hand in writing another masterpiece!!!
What's the story behind your book?
The story behind my book is very simple. If during a lifetime of believing certain things, one gets the on-off nagging feeling that these beliefs do not really hold water and certain thoughts and events lead to a totally different reality, then with objectivity and reasonable evaluation one must accept the new evidence and modify one's beliefs to reflect this reality. Due to many contradictions between my original beliefs and the world around me, as well as a lot of thinking I reached certain conclusions that bring in line my new beliefs with the real world. I feel emotionally and spiritually content and in total peace with world around me. I expect that whoever reads and objectively evaluates the logic and evidence presented in the book will experience similar feelings. This is actually the greatest motivation which kept me going during the frequent, nearly daily, times of writer's block.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Just as it is a joy to read a good book, so is the pleasure of offering one's thoughts and ideas to people all over the world, It is even more exciting today because technology enables a book in electronic format to reach readers everywhere, something which is extremely difficult to achieve with a normal print book But the greatest joy is the feeling of making a contribution, even minute or insicnifigant, towards the improvent of the world and human society. Furthermore a book represents a legacy left behind from one's passing on this planet.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a book regarding the process of sensible decision making and the requirements necessary for making the most beneficial selection, when faced with a multitude of options. The book introduces, on elementary level, the concepts of "Probability", "Mathematical Expectation" and "Risk Analysis", explaining the role of these concepts in the decision making process.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The prospect of a delicius breakfast prepared in a unique way by my wife!
The expectation of new ideas regarding technology projects or thoughts about resolving issues of .....global proportions like world economy, politics, religion and others!!
The expectation of spending some quality time with my eighteen month old grandson and
The expectation that at least one new person will read my book.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans are equally as important to an author as the contents of the author's book. The best book will be worthless if no-one reads it,or if the majority of the readers reject its contents. Personally I have no fans yet, since this book is my first work, but I am confident that many readers will find value and will be challenged in many ways by its contents .I am eagerly awaiting the responce of those who will read it and I view them as the judge and jury regarding the value of my work.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Developing software aplications or programs for my own use, reading non-fiction books on physics, astronomy and mathematics ( mainly probability theory and statistics ), following the daily performance of world financial markets, the latest political developments wordwide, spending time with my wife and granson and watching a good mystery thriller on the television.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mainly by searching well known retailer sites for the categories in which I am interested, I read the short description, if I am interested I continue to the longer overview and this gives me a good idea about the style of writing as well as the contents of the book. Many times I purchase without further hesitation, but if I have doubts then I download the EPUB format of the sample before I make a final decision.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes I certainly do. It was the story of "Little Red Ridinghood" and it had an adverse impact on my relationship with my grandmother, because after reading it I became anxious and afraid of visting her. At the same time I read the story of the "Three pigs" and this cemented my impression that wolves are the most agressive and disliked animals on this planet. Not only they eat grandmothers but they also destroy other people's properties!
How do you approach cover design?
Certainly from the marketing point of view a good cover is very effective in attracting the attention of prospective readers. It is similar to the bait used when one goes fishing. But the bait does not catch fish. The hook must be suitable and by this I mean that the short summary and long overview must correspond to the promise made by the cover. People believe that a picture is worth a thousand words but they also know that too many words indicate poverty of argument. The cover design as a marketing aid is well known to the readers of eBooks and I am of the impression that the majority give much more importance to the saying that a book must not be judged by its cover! After all a beautifull lady will still be beautifull even if dressed in rags.
What do you read for pleasure?
My bank overdraft statement. The smaller the overdraft the greater the pleasure.Alternatively I really enjoy a good novel on a court case or crime thriller.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The overwelming benefits of self-publishing in electronic format versus print format made the decision a "no-brainer". The benefits are too many, but the most important are:
1)The book gets exposed to worldwide readership.
2)The book normally never gets unpublished.
3) Most critical issues like pricing, marketing and contend, which can at any time be updated, remain under the author's control.and
4) Publication is easy and affordable while distribution is left to the publishing platform who are experts in handling such issues.
