Interview with Giacomo Giammatteo

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to tell my stories to so many people. I come from a large Italian family, and we had long line of storytellers. During family get-togethers my father, or one of my uncles, would take turns telling stories, or jokes, or doing card tricks. No matter what it was, though, the "art" of the telling was what mattered. There's no question that they influenced my style, and I bring a lot of that flavor into my own stories.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. If I'm having a bad day, and I pop open an email from a reader telling me how much they enjoyed the story, or that they could relate to one or another character, that means the world to me. Or if I read a review that says they couldn't put the book down. There is not much that's better, because I know how I feel when I can't put a book down, and to think that I could make someone else feel that way is beyond words.
What are you working on next?
This is always a loaded question. I don't know how other writers work, but my process is both organized and disorganized. I'll explain. I have so many ideas that I find myself jotting down notes and scenes of different books all the time: in the waiting room of the doctor; at night with a notepad on the nightstand; during morning coffee; even while I'm writing one book, I'll think of something that should go into another one, so I switch gears and write a scene or a plot point. That's the disorganized part.

On the plus side, I always know how a story will end before I start it, and all my plots are created in the same basic way. I have a concept or theme that I follow for each series. The Friendship and Honor series revolves around the problems/conflicts that might arise out of a pact or oath of F&H. I imagine a scenario that would create conflict and go with it. I despise a novel where the ending seems fabricated, so I swore I’d never do that.

So to get back to what I'm working on:
Mystery books:
I just released Necessary Decisions, which is in the Redemption Series.
I'm also working on:
A Bullet From Dominic, Blood Flows South book II
Premeditated, a novella about one of the characters in Necessary Decisions
Murder Takes Patience, Friendship and Honor book III
Old Wounds, a Redemption Novel

Non-fiction:
No Mistakes Interviews, book II of the No Mistakes Career series
No Mistakes Guide to Misused Words

Fantasy:
Vengeance is Mine, Book IV of the Rules of Vengeance series
Who are your favorite authors?
Alexandre Dumas, John Sandford, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Frank Herbert, Donna Leon, and when I need to laugh out loud, Luciano De Crescenzo.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
This isn't an option. My wife and I have an animal sanctuary with 45 animals. They need to be fed, which means I not only have to get up and feed them, but I have to make money to pay for the food.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have a headhunting business that I work on during the day, and we run an animal sanctuary. Between those two I find I have little time to write.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth, and if I'm browsing, I normally do it by sorting lists according to average customer reviews. I then read the reviews and decide if I think I'd like it. If I do, I read a sample. If I still like it, I buy it.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It's my first book published, Murder Takes Time.
What is your writing process?
I try to edit as soon as dinner is over, as there is always something that needs editing. Then I write blog posts if that needs to be done, and then, about ten at night, I start writing.
How do you approach cover design?
The first thing I thought of was how to establish an author brand, and a series brand. I came up with the GG banner I use on the top of all books and the GG logo at the bottom of each cover and on the spine. They are different colors for different genres, so all mysteries the logo and banner are gold; for my non-fiction books they're red; and they will be different colors for each genre. Also, each series has different things to identify them. I use a church on all the Friendship and Honor books; a bullet in all of the Blood Flows South books; and the skyline of Houston for all of the Redemption books; for non-fiction the colors are bright and definitely make a different statement.

Quite often I take the pictures myself for the cover; if not, I have my book cover designer find a great image. She does a magnificent job.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
This is probably going to seem like a strange list for a mystery writer, but here goes.
1. The Count of Monte Cristo -- Alexandre Dumas.
I think Dumas was one of the greatest storytellers of all time. I would kill for a hint of his talent. His plots, characters, and prose were all superb. I have read this book at least six times.

2. Thus Spake Bellavista -- Luciano De Crescenzo
Luciano is an Italian author and philosopher. This book is a hilarious account that demonstrates the philosophy and temperament of the people of Napoli (Naples). I have read this at least a dozen times and whenever I need to laugh out loud, I pick it up again.

3. Dune -- Frank Herbert
IMO, the best SciFi book of all time. Another one I've read multiple times. Herbert's genius for world building and character development ranks at the top of the list.

4. Scipio Africanus--Greater Than Napoleon? -- B.H. Liddel Hart
This is a phenomenal account of one of the most important men in history and yet few people know of him. The clash between Scipio and Hannibal determined the fate of the Western world and altered the course of history.

5. Napoleon [Napoleone Buonaparte] (by so many authors it's hard to say which was best)
I have read more than 20, probably closer to 30, books about Napoleon, and there always seems to be something new to learn. As an aside, there have been more than 200,000 books written about Napoleon. I have a long way to go.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Wilmington, DE, about 30 miles from Philadelphia. Wilmington is an interesting city. It's not a big city, but it has the feel of a big city, complete with ethnic neighborhoods. When I grew up we had Italian, Irish, Polish, Puerto Rican, Black...all the diversity you could want, packed into a small space. Growing up this way gave me a flavor for different people and cultures and when you hung out on the streets, you learned things. I try to bring some of that into my books. In fact, the F&H series takes place in Wilmington, and also Brooklyn.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Necessary Decisions is the first book I published in the Redemption series. Here's the description for it:

Gino Cataldi is a man hanging on by a thread. Cancer took his wife, and drugs put his son in rehab. All he has left is his badge.

When a teenage girl is kidnapped it brings back nightmares from the worst case he ever worked—the one that tore his life to shreds and forced him out of Philadelphia.

Gino doesn't want this case but he knows he has to take it. Not just to save the girl, but to earn redemption for what went wrong in Philly.

I love this book. It's one of my favorites.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It wasn't my first choice, but knowing what I know now, I'm glad it worked out this way.

I tried getting an agent and going the traditional route, but my first book, Murder Takes Time, was rejected by damn near every agent out there. A few of them showed interest, but they wanted me to change too much. I'm not opposed to change, but the things they wanted me to do would have ruined the book. I worried about that for a while, but considering the way people have taken to it, I'm glad I stuck to my guns on this.
What do you read for pleasure?
History, SciFi, Fantasy, Mystery.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
iPad, using iBooks.
